DNS-323 Undo RAID-1 without data loss?

I have tried searching on this forum and others to find an answer but have had no luck.  I have setup my DNS-323 with RAID-1 and now am regreting my decision as I feel having a backup with rsync is more important to me than data redundancy.

Does anyone know of a way to undo a RAID-1 into 2 separate volumes without data loss?  I have too much data to backup without getting another HD so I am wondering if this technique would work:

- Remove one of the sync'd RAID-1 drives
- Change the DNS-323 setting to 'standard individual drives' (which forces a reformat of the single drive, right?)
- Once changed, can I reinsert the 2nd RAID-1 drive and have it available as a volume (thus saving my original data) or will I be required to reformat it?

Perhaps there is a way to do this by SSH'ing to the box with funplug installed?

Thank you kindly for any insight!

Curtis
