Hi Folks,

I have a serious case I can't solve due to my poor knowledge on the rsync (and unix command) knowledge.

Here's the thing:
I want to shedule a daily backup FROM a Synology DS 209II+ TO a DNS 323 and though over internet.

1-The setup on the Syno is quite ok cause going through his GUI .
2-Nevertheless, on the DNS 323 I install the latest fun plug 0.5 BUT I just dont know how to activate and setup the thing concerning
a- Running the RSYNC on DNS 323 as a client (should be in that way?) to receive the files from the Syno
b-Setup the password, user, ssh, mount the disk, create and have folder authorization, make a script to automate the activation...

Cause the amount of files is big, I am planning to make the 1st backup set over the LAN . Its about 300GB...
Then run as incremental or diffrential to keep those things in perfect synchronization over internet, daily...

Anyone has this knowledge to help me out. I would so be gratefull cause right I am turning in circle.

I'll give it a try.

So you want to use the dns323 as a client to pull files from your syno. How do you plan to access files on the Syno? What services is the syno runnig ( ssh server, ftp server, rsync-server, samba server, ..) ?

If you plan to use rsync. The syno should probably provide ssh-server (sshd) or rsync-server (rsyncd).

Yes the synology has in his menu the possbility to setup a backup using rsync. Basically need to enter the url or ip of the target rsync client and user detail like user and password, date time of the backup...

The Syno can be client as well but I really prefer using him as a server tu push the files from him to the dns323. Can we setup as a push rather than a pull? Because the setup in Syno is easy for schedule by GUI.

Please let me know the difference between ssh-server (sshd) and rsync-server (rsyncd).

Ok go for push from syno. You seem to like that box.

Then you need to setup either sshd or rsyncd on dns323. I am guessing the syno expects a rsync server for the provided hostname/ip.

I have not setup rsyncd myself. Here is a guide.

Sshd (Secure Shell Daemon) is the daemon program for ssh. Together these programs replace rlogin and rsh programs, and provide secure encrypted communications between two untrusted hosts over an insecure network. The programs are intended to be as easy to install and use as possible.

rsyncd is dedicated server for handling rsync.

Also be careful how you expose your dns323 to the hostile internet. Standard ffp 0.5 has wide-open-password-free-root-access-telnet running.

Its out of my skillset actually and I conviced my customer to go for another Synology. Then I will mak backup 2 Syno easy...
