Good morning,
I'm going to install debian on my DNS-323, following this: http://www.cyrius.com/debian/orion/d-li … stall.html , but I do still have some questions:
- Where is stored the whole operating system, the config files, on disk, or on non volatile memory?
-
- If one drive fails (or two), is it possible just to put another one, connect through ssh, and configure the new one?
- if the OS is stored on disk, I'm thinking making a system partition mirrored on the second disk with RAID1, what do you think?
Thank you very much.

usually it's stored on the disk (but it's also possible to install on a usb stick).
if the disk fails, you are skrewed. then you have to replace it with a working backup or restore the stock firmware with a serial console.
mirroring the system partition is a good idea, but if want to do a automatic fail back you will have to configured the boot loader and initrd approciated, i'm not sure if it's done automatically.

Thanks for the reply.
Well the idea is, if drive sda fails, then the system would boot automatically from sdb, so I would have the opportunity to replace / rebuild the faulty drive.

Or put temporarily the sdb drive into the sda slot, and a new drive into the sdb slot, so it can boot and the array can be rebuilt...
I guess that in this case, UUID should not be used in the boot files.
