Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

How to monitor HD hibernation status?

Customizing my DNS-323 step by step to what is useful for me, I have the feeling that HD hibernation does not work as before. Unfortunately it's hard to say if the HDs are spinning or not, they are so quiet nowadays.
I have FW 1.08, the basic funplug package 0.5 with only telnet activated, sometimes the BT torrent client active (but mostly deactivated) and the uPNP server running. I suspect that the uPNP server keeps the HDs awake (without any client running on the NW).

Would be good to get a mod showing the hibernation status on the LEDs (using a special colour or blink code). Is there something like this around? Collecting the hibernation status into a log would be fine as well, but this should be in RAM only, of course... wink

Other question: Do the disks hibernate separately? Or would both wake up, if one gets accessed?

Does anybody have an idea?

Re: How to monitor HD hibernation status?

First - hibernation status indication - if both disks are hibernated the LED behind the power switch goes off, so that the switch button appears to be "dim", second - I'm not certain if the disks hibernate separately, but I would assume they do, because they "wake" seperately.

It should be possible to verify this for yourself - assuming you have the disks as separate volumes, you can allow the unit to idle until it hibernates and then access the volumes one by one - it's usually possible (remove the front panel if necessary) to hear them spin up, and in some cases, you'll hear when the heads retract and park.

Re: How to monitor HD hibernation status?

Thanks for this hint! I did not know / can not remember that I have seen the LED behind the power switch go off or dim.

I just checked my HDs temp, and could clearly find out that the left one is cold and the right one is still spinning. I assume that they hibernate and awake separately.

I think now that the indication for both HDs hibernating is enough. Especially if you have a new device, there is usually the wish of total control, because you don't trust what's going on... wink

Still, I would like to have both disk hibernating, when not accessed for some time. Most time of the day the NAS is not needed in my home. Something prevents them from going to sleep and I want to find out what. How could I find out? Some kind disk access log?

Can only be the basic fun_plug package with telnet. I have no other modification on my box, only this plus the script for nightly snapshots. But why would telnet need the disk permanently?

Re: How to monitor HD hibernation status?

Looking a bit more around in this forum, I found the hint that a full print queue can keep the disk running. I checked the .lpd directory and found two big files, which I assume where print jobs. I clicked the "clear print queue" button on the status page, and those files disappeared. Now my disks are sleeping, and I will do the same soon. wink

I find the dim power button is enough to see both disks are hibernating. To conclude this thread, from my point of view, my question "How to monitor the HD hibernation status" is answered.

New question: How to find zombie print jobs? wink  Seems its good to clear the queue from time to time. But I have to admit I am playing still with the config, e.g. changed device name recently, etc. To find out if those zombie print jobs appear regularly, the DNS must be used in a stable configuration for some time.

Re: How to monitor HD hibernation status?

I agree that sometimes it is hard to be sure if the disks are spun-down when they should be.

In addition to what has been said so far, I have found that there is a spin-up delay if I start accessing a disk via ssh.  I ssh into the box and do something like 'ls <some directory on one of the disks>'.  If there is a 3 sec or more delay, then I know that the disk was spun-down.  This needs to be taken with a grain of salt because sometimes linux can cache info like this.  But I do usually see the delay and that tells me the disk was spun-down.  Plus, I can do this sort of check from anywhere and don't need to be in the same room to look at the lights or listen for activity.
