Hi. I have a DNS-323 connected by cable to my computer, and whenever I play mp3s or video files directly from it the playback hangs for 10-15 seconds every few minutes. During these breaks, the front panel LEDs of the 323 are just continuously lit.
I have reinstalled Windows XP on my laptop but the problem remains. Are anyone else experiencing this?
Technical details: Computer is XP SP2, 1GB, Realtek gigabit LAN. DNS-323 is 1.02b and has Barracuda disks.

I hadn't really done a lot of playing music off the drive yet, but tried it after I saw your message, and I haven't had any gaps or pauses in playback over my wireless network to my laptop...100 mbps lan on an HP laptop and Netgear pre-N 100 router, 11g wireless.
Any reason why you haven't upgraded to FW 1.03?

No reason really, are there any changes in 1.03 that should fix my problem? Thanks for testing, btw ;-)
And how safe are my data while flashing the 323, I can't be bothered to back up 400GB of data somewhere else when I've already invested in a reduntant disk array...

You're welcome.
I flashed from 1.02 to 1.03 after setting up my hard drives (you have to set up the drives first, then flash until FW 1.03 if I remember correctly). I didn't have any problems, but all of my data was already backed up, so I wasn't worried about it.
I don't know that 1.03 will help that problem, or whether the issue is something going on with your home network, rather than being caused by the DNS-323...here's what Dlink says it fixes:
http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=509&sec=0#firmware wrote:
- Fixed Daylight Savings Time causing GUI crash.
- Fixed 2 gig limitation for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista.
- Fixed e-mail notifications when using RAID 1 Mode.
- Added support for *.mp4 files on UPNP Av Server.
- Added ability to update firmware without having HDD installed.
- Added EDIT icon under scheduled downloads to modify existing schedules.
- Requires Easy Search Utility 3.5.0.0 or higher.

Further investigation reveals that this freeze-up appears to occur every 10 minutes when playing video or music from the thing, no matter if I use Winamp, Windows media player or VLC. I can't say there is anything in the new firmware that strikes me as something that should fix this but I'll flash it if I get around to backing it up.
Also, my home network is wireless but the DNS-323 is just connected directly to my laptop with the enclosed cable, just like an external harddrive.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like there's anything in that list that is going to help you, but you never know....
I ran mine for about 30 or 40 minutes with no freeze-ups or any other problems...this was using Windows media player to play the MP3s...
If you have any other PCs/laptops you can try the DNS-323 with that might at least help narrow down where the problem lies.
Good luck working it out.

Ok, firmware 1.03 mysteriously improves it a little bit, the hick-ups are shorter but still occur. Strangé... :-)
