Horrible idling temp

Anyone notice horrible idling temps in their DNS 323? I had 2 drives (JBOD) running Firmware 1.5 overa year and temps range from 41-44 degrees celcius. Just upgraded to firmware 1.6 so the fan would stop spinning even at lower temps. So the fan does stop spinning when HDD is in sleep mode, but temp reading inside the admin console is still showing 44 degrees! Anyone else see these horrible temps as well? 44 degrees in the long run cannot be good for a HDD.

Re: Horrible idling temp

What are other people seeing for your HDD temps inside the admin area for the DNS 323? HDD's inside a server right beside the 323 is reading 30-35 degrees C. DNS is reporting 40+.

Re: Horrible idling temp

I'm seeing 44*C at idle - however - a word of caution, what's reported in the GUI is NOT the disk temperature, but the temperature in the air space below the disks (the sensor is on the board in the bottom of the DNS-323.  The disk temp (as measured with an IR gun) was 37*C

Re: Horrible idling temp

That gives some reassurance, thanks fordem. Updated to 1.06 and fan can now turn off finally during "low" temps! Good to see you here still offering great replies.

One funny thing about GUI temperature, it does not change even when you run the unit with the front door off. You would think that would help.

Re: Horrible idling temp

If I recall correctly - mine rises if I remove the front panel.  The cabinet design forces air flow through the lower section where the controller board is and removing the panel defeats this.

Re: Horrible idling temp

Actually - the idle temp by itself doesn't tell you much - you also need to know the ambient temperature of the room the DNS-323 is in, and perhaps the type of disk that's inside for it to be meaningful.

A DNS-323 in a warm room will report a higher idle temp than the same unit in a colder environment and the faster drives (higher rpm) run quite a bit hotter than the slower ones.
