FTP activity

Hi,

Is there another way to know how many (and, why not, which) user(s) is(are) connected to the ftp than to connect to the ftp with any ftp software?

A gui for example?

Thank you !

Re: FTP activity

I'm still waiting for a reply to a query to D-Link about this.  Very good question pudeldoodle.

I'm also troubled by the lack of ftp setup features, like using a non-standard port, rather than 21.

Re: FTP activity

The FTP server setup in the Advanced tab in the DNS-323 setup GUI provides an option to set your FTP port.   It has a field labeled "Port" and says next to it "( 1~65535,Default:21)."

I've left mine at the default, but it sure looks like you can set a non-standard port...you'd have to tell your router to forward FTP requests to that port as well, of course.

Re: FTP activity

Yes, you just put in the port and save.  What happens though is that the party coming in over the internet IP can connect to the server, but times out after the List command is issued.

Typically in classic server software (Serve-U, Guild, Cerberus) I've used,  you have another setup screen where you set the range of PASV ports.  This doesn't seem to be available in the DNS, just the listening port.  Behind a router, you normally have to open a series of ports in any range in addition.

My DNS works ok if I use port 21.  Traditionally I use a non-standard port to limit possible pinging from people who are not invited.  smile

I can test this absolutely by logging on an unencryped wireless signal from my neighbor and test it.

Re: FTP activity

Thanks...I've been using the standard port 21) so haven't experienced the issues you note.  I was thinking about changing it to a non-standard port, but hadn't gotten around to it yet...

So it sounds like Dlink only implemented part of what is needed to enable use of non-standard ports....

Re: FTP activity

Well, try going over to /etc/ftpaccess and edit the pasv ports. Make sure the ftp server is stopped before you edit the file. Hope it helps

Re: FTP activity

Do you know what PASV ports, if any, are already specified in the DNS firmware?   That might be what I need so I can forward those through my router.

by "going over to /etc/ftpaccess" do you mean the procedures outlined on the wiki site about firefly?  This sounds like a big learning curve for this old time windows guy.  I'll have to read up on this more.

Does this imply that you need a serial interface and to do this activity from a Linux box?

Anyhow, this is the first useful tip I've received.  I got a reply to my query from D-Link about my problem.  The guy who responded asked "Did you correctly forward the non-standard port?".  Like duhh.  My request for assistance already answered that question.  He offered no info and I'm still waiting for a reply to my "yes" resonse.  sad

Thanks shadowandy.
