Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

Does the logfile reveal anything?
If not, you can't really do much since you're using a release build. It doesn't have any debugging information.

Nothing in the logs sad
Waiting for 1.91 (according release notes some crashes are fixed) compiling.

Thank you

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

Since I know you guys can't eat or sleep as long as the latest Transmission version isn't running on your DNS-323, I've updated the first post with v1.91 :)

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

haha, nice 1.

Upgraded first from firmware v 1.07 to 1.08 no problems, then upgraded Transmission from 1.83 to 1.91; all seems A-OK.

Thanks, I was beginning to suffer from sleep deprivation and hunger pains smile

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

KyleK
I have noticed strange behavior of Transmission:
I left my NAS working alone (downloading 1 torrent and 31 torrent of 130+ are in active state being seeding) in my home network and monitored bandwidth statistics on router, here is picture:
http://isildur.no-ip.org/traff.jpg
As you see - there is drop of speed approx every 2 minutes. I looked through transmisiion log file and noticed that there are many lines exactly in those time periods of low speed with such content:

Code:

Saved "/mnt/HD_a2/.transmission-daemon/resume/blah-blah.resume" (bencode.c:1644)

always ending with this string:

Code:

Saved "/mnt/HD_a2/.transmission-daemon/stats.json" (bencode.c:1644)

Is that normal?
p.s. there is steady 10-25% of CPU load by one of transm daemon threads.

Sorry, I didn't see a notification about new private message, here is results with test build (almost the same test conditions, but no downloading torrents, only seeding)

The intervals match with the entries in the log.

Could you send me a snipped of your logfile, maybe 10-20mins worth?

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

Isildur, how'd you create those nifty bandwidth graphs? Is it integrated in your router, or a separate tool?
I'd like to see if I can replicate your Transmission's behavior but don't really know how to properly measure the throughput.

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

KyleK, this is a feature of unofficial firmware (called Tomato) for my Asus RT-N16 router. I'm using this mod by teddy_bear, but there are many other mods with support of plenty devices.

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

Could be the pauses you're seeing is related to disk I/O.  Would be interesting to query your dmesg to see if you're getting memory related errors.  Disk access could significantly affect bandwidth in the way you're seeing it.  Besides, 900kb/s of upload is perhaps something the 323 can't consistently handle.
Atleast those pauses don't look like they last for more than a split second.

Do you recall your 323 ever being able to handle those speeds without the pauses?

if your log entries are an indication of the problem, it could be that writing to the log itself is creating the disk I/O that's causing the problem.. try to disable logging and see if that helps.

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

obveron, thanks for your hypothesizes
I have WD WD10EACS 1TByte disk in NAS, it can handle more heavier load (both sequence and random IOps), so I think, that this disk isn't a bottleneck of this IOsystem. And I regularly see speeds around 35 Mbit/s of total upload or download with transmission on my NAS (in those situations CPU of my NAS are overloaded by one of transmission threads, but disk still can eat all those transferring data).
These pauses lasted approximately 10 seconds, but they don't bother me. It's just interesting - why they occur.
I disabled logging and didn't see any differences.
Here is my dmesg output, I think that all within normal limits, isn't it?
I just made one test: as always - left NAS alone in network seeding torrents in transmission, but also I opened SSH connection to DNS-323 and gave him command to download linux dvd from internet via ftp connection in midnight commander (down speed was ~ 1.5 MByte/s).
http://isildur.no-ip.org/traff3.jpg
as you can see from the picture above - speed drops in seeding ~ every 3 mins via transmission, but at the SAME time +/- stable down speed via ftp. Any suggestions?

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

Is that dmesg after a reboot, or is it after hours of use?  That's a clean dmesg, but its good to see it after using the NAS for a few hours.

Perhaps do some packet sniffing to see if there is any unusual traffic during those pauses.

Try removing some transmission features, like DHT and PEX to see if that makes a difference.  Also try lowering your peer limit per torrent, and setting some reasonable speed limits.  Just to narrow down if the cause is with transmission in the first place.
You could also try seeding only 1 or 2 torrents to see if that has any effect.

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

They're working fine for me. Make sure your provider doesn't block port 31337 (companies like to only open up the standard ports).

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

My provider (Telenet, Belgium) blocks port 31337 since it is/was commonly used by Back Orifice.
Is there any other way to get the software on page one ?

Note: 31337 is a hackerz spelling of 'elite', meaning 'elite hackers', or so it seems (if you believe everything Wikipedia says).

Thanks in advance.

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

obveron, I have exact the same dmesg after few days of uptime.
Thanks for idea, I'll do some tests with DHT and PEX later.

Bimbam, I mirrored those files: curl-7.18.1.tgz Transmission 1.91.

Isildur, thanks a lot.
I'll try to install/run it when I finish my exams (if I can wait that long).

Re: [REL] Transmission 1.3

Anyone else see their transfer rate plummet when downloading more than a certain number of torrents to Transmission?  Transmission seems to choke on anything more than two active downloads on my DNS-321.  It's really strange.  I can be downloading three torrents and none of them break 20KB/sec.  I remove one of the three and bam, the other two are up to 200KB/sec.

Just me or is this common?

On my 323 I don't get that. I thought I did but it turned out it was my crappy ISP.

Heh, I tried this and now I get less than 10KB/sec on all my downloads.  Some of them were sitting at 500 BYTES/sec.  I guess my little NAS simply can't handle more than a few torrents at a time.  No biggy I suppose, it's still better than leaving a laptop running all the time.

Back to 96 peers per torrent...
