I'm back after a few moths (my daughter was born, but it's offtopic now ). I'd like to give vlc and mediatomb an other chance to decode aac streams. I see there is a new build of mediatomb and I've found a new optware vlc 0.9.9a-1. I downloaded it, but it has the same old issue that it can't be run as root. Your last build of vlc 0.9.5 (that can be run as root) has the issue that I can't stop it. Simply it freezes (killall vlc or CTRL-C have no effect, vlc stays in the process list), I have to restart dns-323. Do you have a newer build of vlc?

Hello,
just figured out, that 0.12 will not going to be officially released this year due to some old russian car (as published in the new-section on mediatomb.cc)
but maybe someone can do something usefull in regard to the DNS-323 using information on this homepage?

as you can read in page 6 of this thread:
1) Copy the tar.gz file to the Volume_1 directory. You can do this using the Windows explorer.
2) Telnet (or ssh) into the DNS-323 (this requires a fun plug install)
3) cd /mnt/HD_a2
4) tar -xzf mediatomb-0.12.0-SVN2017-static-dns323.tar.gz
5) cd mediatomb12
6) ./mediatomb.sh

Does anyone know if it is possible to schedule an autoscan job using crontab and if so, how?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
im new to this forum. Just changed to this svn mediatomb cause 9k of musicfiles make the dns 323 unusable for several days while rescanning.
An autoscan event can be set in config.xml too, but jin told me that the ui event must be deleted before. I run in an ugly locking situation with this. I dont know a proper way to rescan by cron, i see a danger if scans are overleap than normally is checked by MT.

Hello,
just a question to this package. I have some divx (avi) files on the dns, with fonz they are scanned and available in upnp video chain. I can use them with the vlc player. With this package there is no video chain visible, in config.xml i switched on this and add the following
<map from="avi" to="video/divx"/>
<treat mimetype="video/x-divx" as="avi"/>
Mediatomb 12 shows the avi files in database view, i can download the stream from there. The class look a bit ugly, think this should be a video mimetype? For vlc no video folder exist.
Class: object.item
Mimetype: application/octet-stream
Any ideas what went wrong here?

Hi all!
I just would like to as if is there any progress serving iso files from DNS-323 via mediatomb?
The mkv files can played on my WD TV Live well, but the dvd iso file support is still missing as I see.
Another question: is there a way to index the .ac3 files as well? Many of my HD movies has attached additional audio files with this extension. I know in upnp the audio and video streams are separated, but is there a way to serve these additional audio streams with the videos?
Many thanks!

Thanks to Boilerjt, i have got the Mediatomb 12 running on my DNS-313.
I posted this in the DNS-313 section, but maybe someone running a 323 can help.
I'm running the WDTV live. Only issue is with thumbnails. With the WDTV live if you have image file in same directory as the media file [i.e movie.jpg in same dir as 'movie.avi'] then you can display the thumbnail. However when streaming via media server the thumbnails do not display.
Does anyone know if it is possible to make a change to config.xml to get the thumbnails displayed ? The thumbnails are displayed ok if i connect the DNS-313 via USB.

Hi Guys!
First of all I'd like to thank Boilerjt for providing us with mediatomb 0.12 - it works like a charm on my device!
But compared to my ubuntu pc running mediatomb 0.11 there is one little thing missing.
When I browse my movies trough ps3, I can't see file attributes like length or resolution.
I guess this has something to do with mediatomb not "understanding" the content it is streaming because of some sort of missing codec on the NAS.
(the PS3 allways displays two lines of information for each movie in the overview where line 1 shows the title and line 2 only shows "- -" because of those missing infos, otherwise I wouldn't mind..)
So does anyone know a way to get this to work?
thanks from germany

Hi, can someone help me out with a command line to stop the daemon service? I'm a novice (if even that) and new to the DNS-323. I assume there is a better way than rebooting the NAS. THANKS so much!! --Brian

You may simply use:
> killall mediatomb
or you create an ffp start script like mentioned a few pages earlier.
Then you could start/stop mediatomb with something like:
> /ffp/start/mediatomb12.sh start
> /ffp/start/mediatomb12.sh stop

Did anyone tried stream shoutcast radio using Media Tomb to wdtv live. I tried but I am unable to do it. If anyone had success kindly post how did you do it.
Thanks.

You can try and import a pls file with the stations. That did the trick for me. The next steps would be customizing the playlists.js.
On a side note, has anyone managed to transcode CR2 image files, extracting the jpeg thumbnails, as shown here: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/MediaTomb#Raw_Images ?
Edit: Im seeing that image trancoding wont end in playing at all. Changed the transcoding script to a cat "file" > "$2" and still wont work. The differences found was the absence of content-length header at the upnp answer.
If anyone managed to get image transcoding working, I would like to read his oppinion

Did anyone ever manage to compile ogg123 on their dns-323?
What it does appear to be able to do is down sample flac to lpcm at a bitrate a dumb as crippled dlna device might be able to handle.
I may just have to by a device I can hook to my receiver that will transmit real sound rather than am radio noise.
thanks,
rf.

Does this version mediatomb-0.12.0-SVN2017-static-dns323.tar.gz support online-content (Apple Trailers)?
I can't see any Online Content menu on my PS3, although I guess I have everything configured right.

Could someone help to create a profile for a Sony Blu-Ray Player model S370, US version ?
By the way, how can I uninstall mediatomb from my DNS-323?

To remove Mediatomb first stop the process from running (killall mediatomb) and then simply go to the directory where it is installed and delete it ('rm -rf /mnt/HD_a2/mediatomb12' is the command I use, as that's where I have mediatomb installed...)

With setting the autoscan event in the config.xml, were you able to specify a time? The only way I've found to do it so far is to add the below code, which just replicates the autoscan set by the UI
<autoscan use-inotify="auto"> <directory location="/media" mode="timed" interval="3600" level="full" recursive="yes" hidden-files="no"/> </autoscan>
On that note, autoscan is failing for me - I have a folder which contains a folder with 6 files (...\torrents\top gear\).
I decode all of them from .mkv to .ts (so ps3 will read em), so have 12 files in there.
Auto scan is set to run every 3600 (for testing I made it run every 60 seconds) seconds on the 'torrent' folder (Recursive and Basic), but only finds 1 or 2 new files.
Any one had the same issue? It just isn't finding all the files =/

Hi. MediaTomb is working brilliantly to manage my video (especially the feature to "*" which files have been played).
Anyone else getting every single file marked with a * from the get go? Kinda makes the 'played' feature pointless...

I took the mediatom12 down from my device, i recognize that his memory consumption affects all network troughput here. With NFS / FTP i can read 7MB/s and write 3MB/s if mediatomb12 is in memory, this version was stripped to be a bit smaller. With stopped mediatomb the device troughputs 21MB/s read and 18Mb/s write. Mediatomb12 has reread my 15k files with folder / name script in 3 hours, but with basic tag reading this took 2.5 days. So the device is only the configured seconds to next rescan usable and then 2.5 days unusable for all actions. The upnp-av inside firmware 1.09 rescan everything with tags in 3 hours, acks changes by inotify. So the device has more available time and saves energy. Mediatomb is a very pretty mediaserver with lots of options, but i feel it is to oversized for the small amount of ram in the dns 323.
@cliaz: Yes i got the same results, the timed basic rescan from the config.xml did not see all changes. Only a full rescan has done this well here. I have tested the inotfy hack foe mediatomb but this complains about a wrong svc versions and did not change the mediatomb.db for weeks.

I was trying to get Mediatomb to work on my dns-323. Therefore I installed the 0.12.0, I found the browsing worked on my Samsung, but I could not play anything. Then I uninstalled Mediatomb 0.12.0 and tried the 0.11.0 from fonz funplug with the same result, then I found a post that Samsung TVs need an additional entry and then everything worked fine. Then I wanted to change back to 0.12.0 and reinstalled the 0.12.0, but when I start mediatomb.sh from the mediatomb12 dir, the program tells me that the 0.11.0 is started. Could anybody help me on this? I am sure that at the first installation 0.12.0 was started correctly.
Edit:
First Problem solved, the wrong config.xml was used and the old mediatomb from ffp was used.
Now I have another Problem. When I added media to mediatomb, it works properly, all items are in the database and my Samsung TV plays them. But when I close mediatomb or restart my dns-323, the mediatomb.db is recreated and no data is available until I add something. Is that normal or do I have to close it in a certain way? Is there a "shutdown" script that could close mediatomb?
Edit:
Problem also solved, I activated the Backup function for the library, I don't think that was necesarry, but after that it worked well.
For the other users which have issues with the speed of building the database, I disabled the virtual layout with <virtual-layout type="disabled">, the scan for files is much faster and I prefer the directory view anyway.

bolierjt,
Could you please explain to a lInux newbie, exactly what I need to do to stream Shoutcast with Mediatomb.?
I've tried adding an external link with object.item.audioItem and audio/mpeg as mentioned at http://playon.unixstorm.org/mediatomb.php and cannot get it working.
I am trying to stream to an Omnifi DMS1 from the DNS323.
I was managing via Twonky 4.4.18, but now that does not pick up any radio stations anymore and I am missing Radio Paradise
Now looking for something to specifically stream Shoutcast from the DNS323 and *thought* that Mediatomb would do this.?
The DMS1 plays mp3 files no problem.
TIA

I've found a few of the optware packages that do not work for the DNS-323. MediaTomb uses the curl library and I don't know about the details. It's explained in the MediaTomb documentation. I'm using it right now to play mp3 streams (mostly Shoutcast). MediaTomb uses curl to rip the stream, then redirects the mp3 stream to a fifo, then I use madplay to transcode it to wav since my client cannot play mp3 directly.
