Hi,
since I´m new to the DNS 323 i´ve got an question relating building an RAID 1.
What i would like to do is to format the first HD then transfer my data and then add the second HD an let it sync with the first.
Is this possible?
I´m currently migrating from one NAS to an other but i would like to use the same HDs.
Greetings

It can be done - but - from the sound of it, you're looking to do this without a backup, so let me ask, do you value the data? What will you if something goes wrong?
When you install the second disk the DNS-323 will prompt you to format it, and there will be a check box that you can tick if you want to create a RAID1 array - what should happen next is that the DNS-323 should format the "newly installed drive" and then sync it to the existing one - please note the use of the word should - although it has worked for me, I've seen reports from other people saying that the wrong drive was formatted and the data lost.
Also - if you are going to re-use drives from another device, I would strongly suggest that you remove any partitions on the drive before installing it in the DNS-323, it can be unpredictable when it sees a drive with data when it is expecting a "new" drive.
Out of curiosity - what NAS are you migrating from, and why?

My Problem is missing backup space. That´s why i think about this wired idea.
I already read about the formating issue.
I change from an IcyBox NAS 4220. I had troubles over the last few month and had some troubles with packet loss, spindown, ...
Thx for the reply!

Have you read my signature? RAID1 or not - you NEED to find backup space - assuming that you value the data.
