Upgrade firmware without drives?

I just bought a DNS-323 and would like to upgrade the firmware to version 1.03. So far I have not even turned on the device. The user manual states that the first thing one should do is install the hard drives. Can I upgrade the firmware first, without having installed any drives? If that is possible, would there be any disadvantages to upgrading the firmware without drives in the DNS-323? My idea is to get the latest firmware first, before I format the hard drives or do other things.

Re: Upgrade firmware without drives?

Unless 1.03 is already on the device - it will not not you do anything until a drive is installed.

I installed a single drive in mine, let it format and then proceeded to upgrade to the 1.03 firmware.  As long as you format using ext2 and not ext3 - you will not have to reformat the drives after the upgrade.

Re: Upgrade firmware without drives?

I tried to configure the device without hard drives and, indeed, it does not work. Instead I received this message: "No Hard drives were detected. Please verify that the hard drives are properly connected before continuing."

Therefore, I installed the hard drives, selected RAID 1 configuration, formatted the drives using EXT2, and then upgraded the firmware to version 1.03. Afterwards I reformatted the drives. Interestingly, with firmware 1.03 the maximum RAID size was 498 GB instead of 464 GB with firmware 1.01.
