Native Debian without flashing the firmware - instructions and issues

Hello everyone.

I have been experimenting with ffp-reloaded and Debian. My goal has been to run native Debian installation without flashing the firmware. The motivation to this is to avoid effectively bricking the device, as I, like most of the other users of this device, don't have serial connection available.
I have successfully installed Debian using the kernel and the initial ramdisk that I extracted from the debian-installer firmware file (netboot.img). The installer ran flawlessly, so I suppose that ffp-reloaded should be able to handle recent Debian kernels without any problems.
Booting to the installation with ffp-reloaded works as well. Everything seems to work, so my initial goal of installing and booting Debian natively and not flashing the device is fulfilled.

There is one problem though: whilst booting to Debian with kernel 2.6.26-2-orion5x works, kernel 2.6.32-orion5x is unusable. This is a major problem since newer kernel has many improvements over the older one, and of course, it would be really great if one could update the kernel as newer versions get released.
The problem with kernel 2.6.32-orion5x is that the ethernet connection does not work. I do not know why, but at least for me that is the case. My router seems to be able to assign an address to the device as I can see it in the status page of my router's web administration interface, but connecting to the device is impossible. I tried it in both 100M and 1000M networks, no difference. Observing the logs does not help much either as for me it seems as if eth0 is in working condition and the device will register plugging and unplugging the network cable. The log states though that the device is not able to connect to the DHCP server. I assigned static IP to the device and tried again, but even then the connection did not work. Of course the log did not complain about anything anymore, since it didn't try to fetch DHCP address anymore.
I have not tried any other kernel versions yet, so I do not know if the problem is limited to this single kernel version or not. Furthermore I cannot verify what is causing the problem; the kernel, ffp-reloaded or my hardware. I am also unable to test if the kernel would work flawlessly if I flashed it to the firmware. I am currently on vacation and don't have access to my DNS-323, so further testing from my part won't happen until late next week. It would be great if some people around here could do some testing and see if they can reproduce the same problem. I guess people that have access to serial console can do quite effective debugging, so help from those people would be much appreciated! smile Hopefully the problem isn't anything too hard to fix, and can be fixed, for example, by altering the kernel configs.

Instructions for installing and booting Debian natively on DNS-323 NAS:

These instructions assume that you have a working linux installation on your NAS, in my case it was just fonz' funplug 0.5.

1. Download debian-installer (netboot.img)
2. Download ffp-reloaded
3. Download dns323-firmware-tools
3. Install ffp-reloaded.
4. Install dns-323-firmware-tools
5. Strip the initial ramdisk and kernel from netboot.img. You can use splitdns323fw from dns323-firmware-tools to separate uBoot kernel and ramdisk images from the firmware image. Then you need to remove the 64bit uBoot header from both files. (dd if=x of=y bs=64 skip=1)
6. Boot the Debian installer with ffp-reloaded using the kernel and initial ramdisk from netboot.img
7. Install Debian. I did this in expert mode so I could control the installation process more accurately. I don't know if this is really necessary since I have never tested the standard installation. Does the standard installation give you the choice of whether or not to install the bootloader to firmware? Anyway, Lenny installs with kernel 2.6.26 and Squeeze with 2.6.32. I did not test unstable yet.
8. Boot Debian with ffp-reloaded using the kernel and initial ramdisk from the newly installed Debian installation. You can use vmlinuz and initrd.gz from Debian's /boot without any modifications. I installed to USB hard disk that was assigned to /dev/sdc during installation, but still I had to boot to /dev/sda to make things work. (./reload.sh -k vmlinuz -i initrd.gz root=/dev/sda)

Additional notes: Debian-installer let's you decide how to partition your drives, so your data in the internal disks of the NAS should not be in danger if you use external disk like I did.

Re: Native Debian without flashing the firmware - instructions and issues

So, I spent some time tinkering with my DNS-323 and ended up making some kind of bootloader for it. My idea was to use the initial ramdisks that Debian's standard tools create, and make them work as they should have worked for starters for this device. I added the possibilities to telnet into the device during the booting process (netcat and busybox' telnetd), do filesystem operations (e2fsprogs) and as most important of them all, the possibility to load another kernel and ramdisk from disk and boot it (kexec).

In my opinion something like this should be installed by default by the Debian Installer.

The script for creating the bootloader is attached below, studying it is necessary for being able to use it and the bootloader, I have made no other documentation for them (yet). All the functions can be enabled and disabled through kernel commandline parameters (/proc/cmdline). You will need to apply minor patch to kexec-tools source code before the compiled result will work as intented on the device. The diff for that is also supplied below.

Kernel (Debian 2.6.26) .config for use with above initial ramdisk is uploaded as attachment to this post. Of course you can use other kernels as well, but the one build with that config is confirmed to work on my system (hardware revision B1), so it could work for others too.

Re: Native Debian without flashing the firmware - instructions and issues

Hi Juhog,

first, congrats because you've achieved what I'm loosely trying to do for months (ok, I'm trying not so hard but still). Thanks for the confirmation, I was about to try just that (launch the Debian installer through ffp-reload).
I've tried the same approach with a gentoo kernel with a similar result: my 2.6.32.7 kernel only links to 1000M (directly connected to my macbook, configured to auto-negotiate).
If connected to my 100M switch (both autoneg) it never links up.
If linked to 1000M (still macbook) and forced to 100M (#mii-tool -F 100baseTx-FD eth0) I loose the link.
If linked to 1000M (still macbook) and renegotiated to 100M (#mii-tool -A 100baseTx-FD,100baseTx-HD eth0) it links to 1000M!!!

I think about a kind of bug in the MV-643xx driver. Sadly I don't know who to tell...
Look: in your 2.6.26 kernel the driver announces itself as "[42949397.820000] MV-643xx 10/100/1000 Ethernet Driver"
In your 2.6.32 it is "[   53.706873] MV-643xx 10/100/1000 ethernet driver version 1.4", same as mine BTW.
So the 2 are different versions.
Another difference is the gcc versions (4.1.3 against 4.3.2 and even 4.3.4 for me).
I do not see any other reason...

If you suspect a difference in the kernel config just look at them!
Usually they are provided with the kernel .deb and copied in /boot; just diff them smile

BTW, what is your HW revision? Mine is C1 with u-boot 1.7.6_NAS (Marvell Development Board (LSP Version 1.7.6_NAS)-- RD-88F5182-NAS-2)

Here is my dmesg when trying to renegotiate the link (#mii-tool -A 100baseTx-FD,100baseTx-HD eth0):

Hi mushanga,

mushanga wrote:

how did you accomplish that?

I have also a C1 (MARVELL BOARD: RD-88F5182-NAS-2 LE, U-Boot 1.1.1 (Feb 26 2009 - 11:33:03) Marvell version: 1.7.3.003), but I'm failing to get any kernel booted (except D-links).

I tried the kernel/initrd from the Debian-Installer (also nightly builds) but the device always just switches off, even before mounting the initrd. This was be done by loading kernel/initrd over u-boots console into memory and booting off memory without flashing. This procedure works with D-Links kernel/initrd.

Why do our U-Boot versions differ? Are you sure about your version?

Any hint would be greatly appreciated1

Regards

I cannot access the console since I have no JTAG or Serial adaptor, it's only a deduction from the DLINK 1.08b01 firmware dmesg output:

For info, I bought it in firmware version 1.07 and upgraded it to 1.08b01. That's all.

I'm running 1.06, so I'll upgrade to 1.08b01, maybe that gives a new U-Boot.

Re: Native Debian without flashing the firmware - instructions and issues

Do not forget u-boot upgrade could also be in 1.07... And 1.08 final is out BTW, maybe better than the beta.
Anyway think twice before upgrading just for this reason.
Also, try the reloading approach instead of u-boot booting off memory. It could work better.

Btw: is it even possible to upgrade U-Boot with firmware-updates?

Already tried that, seems to make no difference.

I flashed now 1.07 and 1.08 but U-Boot is still 1.1.1

Re: Native Debian without flashing the firmware - instructions and issues

bernd123,

I know this little talk is moving away from the initial issue but I've been poking around and I've discovered that my u-boot is even older than yours!!

Code:

Tiromancino:~# cat /dev/mtd4 > u-boot.raw
Tiromancino:~# strings u-boot.raw
(...)
U-Boot 1.1.1 (Oct 12 2007 - 17:19:14) Marvell version: 1.7.3.001
(...)

Till now I took for granted the version reported by dmesg (remember I don't have serial console access); wrong thoughts wink

Maybe your HW is more recent than mine. It would explain a lot of things f4exb is experiencing with his also (see http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5460).

And before your start thinking of it, it could be VERY risky to downgrade your u-boot. If it becomes screwed up I think you have to have a JTAG access to restore it if u-boot doesn't even start.

Meanwhile, I managed to get the Debian-Installer booting. The problem is in LED/GPIO-stuff. So building a kernel without CONFIG_LEDS_GPIO seems to work. Who needs LEDs anyway:)

Are you shure?
yours: U-Boot 1.1.1 (Feb 26 2009 - 11:33:03) Marvell version: 1.7.3.003
mine:  U-Boot 1.1.1 (Oct 12 2007 - 17:19:14) Marvell version: 1.7.3.001
Anyway I don't think it is the source of the problem...

Good news! That would mean C1 rev. have a different GPIO conf. for leds, that's all.
I'm glad you can boot a 2.6.32 kernel (it is a 2.6.32, right?).
Do you experience any issues with LAN BTW? My DNS cannot link at 100M with a 2.6.32 kernel.

I'm running 2.6.26-2-orion5x (Debian) and LAN does not work at all. mii-tool reports always a link but dhclient tells me the network is down.

I'm trying 2.6.33 right now.

LAN is working on 2.6.33 (vanilla).

Any chance to see your kernel .config and syslog? smile

Just because I noticed: Your mac-address is different from mine. Look it up here: <http://standards.ieee.org/regauth/oui/index.shtml>, but both registered by D-Link.

Re: Native Debian without flashing the firmware - instructions and issues

It seems that ffp-reloaded is unable to load the newer kernels properly. That means that the only way to load newer kernels is to first boot into quite recent kernel (in my case 2.6.26 from Debian) with ffp-reloaded and then use kexec to load the kernel one wants to use. If fonz does not improve his ffp-reloaded to support recent kernels, I guess the cleanest way to boot into new kernels would be building initial ramdisk that instantly reboots into newest kernel in /boot.

syslog with 2.6.33-2-orion5x (Debian 2.6.33-1~experimental.2) booted using kexec-tools-2.0.1

Re: Native Debian without flashing the firmware - instructions and issues

Hi Juhog,

not that I want to rush you or ask too much but would you mind sharing also your binaries/kernel/image.
I don't have another linux box and I cannot generate the zImage/initrd you talk about.

Thanks in advance

Oh, sorry, I had to postpone this project as I had some university work to do. I uploaded the binaries to http://krunde.net/~juho/ .

EDIT: I added some documentation to my upload directory aswell. Hopefully all the files are usable and beneficial to the community!
