DD-WRT & IPv6 Benefits for DNS-321

Hello All,

I am new to the forum, as well as being new to DNS-321. By buying this DNS-321, I am also finding myself more emersed in the specific science of networking in general. I like to think that I learn fast, and I enjoy learning new technologies. I would not call myself a "hacker" but I am 26 years old and been on a computer my entire life, so I sort of speek the language, if that makes sense. I am not and Idiot, and know the basics to Networking, but I am realizing that there is also a lot I don't know.

I am in the process of setting up the FTP function on my DNS-321, and someone told me I may need a DD-WRT router to avoid purchasing a statis IP.  I am currently using the 2Wire 3800HGV-B (http://www.2wire.com/pages/pdfs/491.pdf) provided by AT&T Uverse.

Can someone direct to some literature, or explain for me, weather or not I require the DD-WRT firmware in my router, and what benefits it brings for the DNS-321, if any? At first I thought it was just the IPv6 option, but my current router provides that, and I am starting to think there is more to it than just the IPv6.  Also, should I use IPv6, does it hold any benefit? I have just started reading about these networking protocols, and I am hoping you all my be able to provide me some good literature to bring me up to speed on all this.

Thanks! -Wayd

Re: DD-WRT & IPv6 Benefits for DNS-321

You don't need a DD-WRT router to avoid purchasing a static ip - the DNS-321 itself has a dynamic DNS client that can be used with DLink's DDNS service to get around that - all you need is a router that supports port forwarding, which your average off the shelf consumer router will probably do, in fact, I would be shocked if you couldn't setup your existing 2Wire to meet your needs.

At this point you also don't need ipv6 and in fact, if I'm not mistaken, having it would serve you no purpose.

The reason for having a static ip address is that with most ISPs, the address you get changes from time to time, and this can potentially make it difficult to locate your ftp server, however, by registering a domain name with a dynamic DNS provider, and configuring your DNS-321 to update the dynamic DNS server, anyone desirous of connecting to your ftp server only need enter the URL and they'll find you.
