Mac woes with 323 - any help appreciated

I have been setting up a Dlink 323 for a friend of mine on a new iMac. Setup went fine although obviously the connection viewer was worthless on the mac, but I got the browser working, drives formatted and running on a dLink wireless router.  The iMac is connected via the wireless connection and the 323 via ethernet (100mb CAT5).

I have connected to the 323 ok via samba but the problem is that the connection drops out whenever the mac adds a new piece of hardware, loads a CD, or anything out of the ordinary. I suspect it will die if left idle for too long as well. My thoughts are that the wireless connection might be to blame, but I was wondering if anybody else had had this problem with a wired network connection or if its "just me"? I am going to try wired connection next but didnt get a chance as it was getting late. Anybody heard of anything like this?
