"Automatic" reset to the Factory Defaults (FW 1.03)

I've upgraded my two DNS-323 units to the last firmware version (1.03) since end of April. Both the units especially the most used, after some day of usage (~2/3 days), are reset to the factory default. The content of the disks is safe, so I need only to restore the customized setting from a file.

The two DNS are configured in RAID-0 with 2x500 Seagate 500 GB disk. I've only enabled the telnetd to be able to make directories or to increase the fan speed (usually set to 4000/4500 rpm) as the disks are always on.

Is it the problem already known ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: "Automatic" reset to the Factory Defaults (FW 1.03)

Are you referring to loosing customized device settings - such as ip addresses, device name, workgroup, email alerts and so on?

This is the first I'm hearing about it - I've been using 1.03 since the day it was released on the US support site and never had to reset my configs.  I don't know if it's important, but fun_plug is installed, along with usb-storage.ko and telnet, more for fiddling that any serious use.

Exactly. All the settings like users, group, ip, password, alerts, etc. are reset. I need to reload a saved version of the configuration to restore the status.

I don't know if the fun_plug can fix the problem. Anyway I can do some test.

The two systems are connected to Windows 2003 clients to share (via SMB) some directory. All the other services like FTP, quotas, UPnP AV, iTunes, DHCP are disabled. The e-mail alerts are enabled while the Power Management is disabled.

Re: "Automatic" reset to the Factory Defaults (FW 1.03)

Windows 2003 clients?  As in Server 2003?

On the surface our environments appear similar - mine is used from Windows clients, in a Windows workgroup, although there is 2K3 server in the mix of clients.  I have no groups on the DNS-323, no quotas, no media servers and ftp is only enabled when required, which is rare - access is almost always via SMB/CIFS - the differences that stand out are that I do have power management enabled, my configuration is two separate disks, and I'm not fiddling with the fan.

To be honest, I've been puzzled by the posts here that I have seen on fan speed/noise, because my unit has always been very quiet, the only time I've heard the fan is at start-up, and then only if I have the front off

Re: "Automatic" reset to the Factory Defaults (FW 1.03)

I've two Windows 2003 Server workstations which act as a client for the 2 DNS-323 mounting directories via SMB/CIFS.

About the fan, also my two units are very quiet. As the NAS are in a computer room, I usually change the fan speed to decrease the disks temperature. At 4000rpm the temperature remains under the 46 C while with the default settings can reach 49/50 C which is always under the maximum allowed (55 C).

I've now disabled the email alerts. At the next (hopefully not) reset I will try to switch on the power management.

No windows 2003 in my setup...I have never lost a setting or configuration...running 1.03 w/2x500GB disks, RAID1.

DNS-323 w/two Seagate 500 GB RAID1
Fonz's Fun_Plug- Don't DNS-323 without it!
