hi there. i just purchased a DNS-323 for use with a Windows XP computer and my Mac running 10.3.9. i wanted to have the NAS act as my iTunes storage and not just serve files, but allow both computers to modify and add to the iTunes Library. well, i got it to work without issue on the Mac by directing iTunes to the NAS for my Music folder, then replacing my Library file with an alias to the original also stored on the NAS. tested this setup on different users and it works in both reading and writing.
i did a quick test on the XP machine exactly the same and was not able to get it to work. apparently, 'shortcuts' don't work the same as a Mac 'alias' so Windows doesn't treat it like it's the original file. iTunes just kept ignoring the files and creating new ones even though the names were identical. does anyone know how to get this to work? i know i just tried the most basic approach, so i wonder if there is a more complicated one. thanks!

I did something like that on a XP machine some time ago, and can't remember all the details, but I think you have to tell iTunes
to re-build the library, or build a new library, at which time U can point iTunes to the NAS.

well, it wasn't working as i thought it was on the Macs. even though i changed the Music folder to the D-Link, iTunes made no changes to where it read the music from so when i deleted the old Music folder, every file link was broken. i ended up just reimporting everything then adding my Library. that created weird double files, but thankfully, it was only a handful of artists.
after that several-hour debacle, i haven't messed with the XP machine. it's just getting it's music served from the D-Link. i think the problem is going to be the version gap between our computers. the XP uses a different folder naming scheme than the older Mac. gonna have to keep researching this...
so, on two of the important reasons i got the D-Link (iTunes library and print server) i only have half the computers working. just like before i got the D-Link. yay!
