DNS323 not reading drives, but drives work

Just got the DNS323 and 2 WD Caviar Blue 500GB SATA drives today.  Hooked the 323 up to the router, navigated to the admin page, updated the firmware to 1.08.  Shutdown the NAS.  Popped in both drives.  Booted NAS.  NIETHER drives were recognized (no HDD lights came on and nothing in the admin page to recognize a new drive).  Rebooted NAS again, the right side was recognized.  So I thought it was the drive.  Swapped the drives in every position and have gotten EACH drive to recognize at LEAST one time.

So, it can't be the drives if it recognized them at least once (one of them a second and a third time, but never BOTH).  I got the left side to recognize a drive, as well as the right.  I've reset the firmware from 1.08 to 1.07, no luck.  Then to 1.05, no luck.  They don't even spin up.  Has anyone had this issue?  Is this a DNS323 problem or a Drive problem?

What should I do?

Re: DNS323 not reading drives, but drives work

You know what I see in topic but not in the post?  The verification that the drives work.

You have a DNS-323, functional status unknown, presumably new (you don't state) and therefore good, you also have a pair of WD drives, again, functional status unknown, presumably new, and therefore good - the problem is that they don't work or they don't work together - and the only way forward in determining where the fault lies is to test them individually.

Either test the drives in a PC using the WD software (download from their web site), or test the DNS-323 with a known good drive - you may find that both are good.

There is a possibility, I don't know how significant, that your particular model of drive may not be compatible with the DNS-323, I'm sure someone will post if they have had success using them, and also that they may require a jumper setting to make them compatible - the first 250GB drives I used with my DNS-323 did not work, and I had to jumper them to force a "spinup" at power up.

The other way forward, again presuming they are new, is to return them.

Yes, all three items are new from Newegg.  I'll test individually in the meantime.

Thanks

Re: DNS323 not reading drives, but drives work

So, after much testing, I think it's a faulty unit.  Last night I was able to get both drives spinning and working.  I could reboot, etc and everything was fine.  But when I removed the drive and put it back in, it wouldn't recognize it again until about 10-15 times later.  So, if I leave it in we're ok...Going to return it though, not going to chance it.

Thanks for the help,
