Upgrading Hard Disk size DNS-323

I am slowly runnign out of disk space

I have two 500Gig Drives (RAID1) - mirror

If I buy two 1 Terra Disks

Can I take out one of the 500G Drives replace it with a "new" 1Terra drive and  wait for the system to copy (mirror) the data from the second "old" 500G to the new 1T. (sort of what woudl happen if a drive failed and needed replacement)

Then exchaneg the other 500G drive, wait for the RAID1 to mirror that drive from the first 1T disk, to the second 1Terra drive and be done.

or is it more complex?

thnx!
g

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk size DNS-323

When that exercise is complete, you will have a 500GB RAID1 array, and the remaining 1TB of space will apparently have vanished into thin air - the only way is to back up your data, replace the drives, create a 1TB array and restore the data.

You might be able to connect one of the original drives to a PC running linux or Windows with the ext2ifs file system driver and get access to the data that way, which would eliminate the need to backup, but the remaining steps wil have to be followed.

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk size DNS-323

thnx!

RAID is no backup. thas is clear.

just thought i could use the "restore after a Disk breaks" function as a backup "replacement"

second idea:

If I change the RAID1 to JBOD
then take out one of the 500GIG
put in a 1T
copy 500GIG onto 1T
take out second 500GIG
then, with only one fo teh 1T drives in the DNS) switch from JBOD to RAID1 and put in the second 1T

might that work?

I only have a laptop, and buying USB cases (and learning soem basic LINUX) just to copy would be a pain.

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk size DNS-323

If you try to change RAID1 to JBOD the system will format both drives and you can kiss your data goodbye - unless you have a copy of it stored elsewhere.

You could try this ...

Remove both of the 500GB drives, install a single 1TB drive and format it, then install a 500GB drive in the empty bay and you should have two separate disks and can copy from one to the other, next remove the 500GB drive and install the second 1TB drive, and when prompted to format, there should be a check box to setup RAID1, check it, and keep your fingers crossed - if there are no hiccups, at the end of the exercise, you'll have a 1TB RAID1 array with the data on it - plus two 500GB drives, each with a copy of the data (just in case, there is a hiccup).

THNX!

sound like a plan!

I would have thougth there was a"standard" solution for this issue as i'm sure that a'm not the only one who runs out of disk space, and wants t put in larger HDs.

I contacted D-Link support, but got no answer...

I'll give t a try, and as you said, i'll still have th two 500G HDs with all the data.

in anothr forum i read there is a differenc which "slot" the HD s in.

sd4 and sdb4... soemthing like that.
and that it makes a difference as one is the "original" and the other a copy.

is that still relevant? the info was quite old (found it in a german forum)

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk size DNS-323

my way of doing it, would be to replace both drivers with the bigger ones and build a new array. then hook one of the olds via usb to the dns-323 and copy the files manually (inside telnet/ssh via cp)

That's probably the quickest way - but he apparently doesn't want to go buy a disk enclosure and learn the few linux commands that he will need - the thing that I found interesting is there's actually someone else out there (besides me) who doesn't own an external USB disk enclosure - I've been promising to buy myself one, or maybe one of those "disk docks" where you just stand the bare drive, connector end down, but I don't seem to ever get around to it.

i see. well, i own a taiwan no-name SATA/IDE to USB connector. quiet handy some times, absolutely worth the 15-20 eur.

Or another possible solution (no warranty):

1. remove 2x500GB hdd and add 2x1TB hdd
2. create the raid with the new disks and format it
3. wait till the raid is synced, then remove one of the 1TB hdds and put the 500GB hdd into its place
4. copy everything from 500GB to 1TB (if possible, depends on how the system recognizes the raid arrays)

The last point is very risky, so be careful.

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk size DNS-323

Going to butt in the discussion here since I am trying to do the same thing on my 323. Basically in the same situation, I have two 650GB drives in Raid1 and would like to upgrade to 2x 2TB drives. Would like to keep it as simple as possible and hopefully not have to get an external enclosure.

I thought about just doing the following, not sure if it would work...

1. Borrow USB HD enclosure from a friend
2. Install the new drives into the 323, setup RAID 1
3. Install one old drive into enclosure, plug into laptop
4. Copy information through the laptop/network onto the new array

Would that work?

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk size DNS-323

well not optimal. you'd have to use linux or the ext2 driver on your laptop to read out drives.  i'd recommend either backup everything over network before and copy it back after the upgrade or connect the drive to your dns-323 instead to your laptop.

Not only the ext2 driver will be missing on windows. Due it's a soho nas, i think it uses software raid, so you'll need mdadm to run the raid array with one disk manually.

no, mdadm/md drivers are not necessary to use just one raid1 drive.

If you use special raid card and hw raid. But i don't think it's hw raid.

Like the man says - mdadm drivers are NOT necessary to use just one raid1 drive - don't argue, try it.

Did you have any success with this method? I got my new drives in today and I am not sure how to go about it. If this does not work I will probably just plug the drive into an external enclosure and just copy over the network.

I used Ultimate Boot CD for this. It has a linux boot on the CD with a nice X gui. However a laptop is not optimal of course because you couldn't just connect the hard drives to it via SATA.

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk size DNS-323

in the end i boght a 500GB esternal USB drive

copyed everything from the "small 500GB disks" onto the external USB drive (takes a long long time...

and thn mounted the new 1.5 TB disks as raid 1 on teh DNS-323

and copied everything onto DNS  from teh external USB drive.

not teh "high tech" solution, but it works.

thnx for all you answers and input!

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk size DNS-323

Several years ago when I first found SATA drives in a computer I bought a SATA Dock it’s a good cheap investment for the inevitable not enough memory problem.
