tools to support 4k drives

Hi.

Are there any tools that can align the drives so that the DNS can read the 4k sector drives in RAID 1 mode?

I tried this method, which installs a "light" version of funplug, but I can't telnet in on my C1 rev hardware. Can anyone help?

Re: tools to support 4k drives

the thread you are posting is all about the DNS-343, but you are posting in DNS-323. what unit do you have? on a DNS-323 there is no impact using 4K sector drives.

Re: tools to support 4k drives

I've got a 323. I thought I read somewhere that these instructions would also work on a 323.

Why would the 4K drives not have a problem on a 323 vs a 343?

They use the same base OS (which doesn't support 4K) drives.

Re: tools to support 4k drives

The only difference between 4kb sector drives and normal hdds is they have 4 kb sectors (normal drives have 512 byte sectors). There is a similar problem with SSD which have even bigger erase sectors like 128 kb or more. It's not true that such drives are not supported by linux or any other OS. it's just they need proper align partitions to reach their maximum performance.

why is that? almost all current file systems use internally 4kb sectors. so if filesystem and hdd sectors are unaligned and we look at a worse case scenario (unbuffered random 4KB writes) the double count of write operation will be done, because one filesystem block write will write both overlapping hdd blocks. obviously this can degrade the perfomance by up to 50%.

but

such scenarios dont happen on a NAS (usually you transfer big files like mp3, movies etc, dont you? and there wont be much difference if you write 700mb or 700.008MB (two extra blocks at both ends) )

a modern hdd can deliever up to 120 mb/s. half of it is still 60 mb/s which is much more than the DNS CPU can do (typical read/write up to 15 mb/s over the net)

why does it have an impact on the DNS-343? the second point doesnt apply because it is much faster. so if you measure such a worst case scenario i described, you will see a difference (still no difference on daily usage patterns)

Re: tools to support 4k drives

You should also consider extra wear by the extra read/written sectors.

Re: tools to support 4k drives

Everything I've read indicates that the DNS-323 stock firmware cannot align itself properly with the 4K sectors, which includes comments by the D-Link team itself. The negative side effect seems to be that the data is secure but will write (and maybe read) at a crawl as the volume fill up increases. Needless to say, I would prefer that things worked properly, even if I have to hack it myself.

So I take it that there are no tools or anything to do this? Seems like the perfect project for the hack community!

Re: tools to support 4k drives

I just started using my new 4k cluster hard disk (WD15EARS), and performed a manual alignment.

I created a HOWTO: http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5729

It's not RAID, but if you follow the link to the other topic you will find more info RAID stuff for the DNS.434, which will probably help you for the DNS.323 as well.
