Hi all,
I have two HDD configured in RAID 1. Suppose one disk fails, how can i read the surviving HDD using the DNS-323 without rebuilding the data? Is that possible?
Thanks.

When a single disk in a RAID1 array fails, the data is accessible with no additional action by the user, in fact, if email alerts have not been configured the user might be completely unaware that a drive has failed, unless he/she happened to notice an amber light on the front panel, or the degraded status in the status page.

My data has been rebuilt so problem solved. But in fact before that when i was told the RAID was degraded, i am not able to access to drive from Windows like i originally was able to.
not that it is a problem now though. tks!

Based on your other thread, your situation was not as simple as a failed disk, but was provoked by your removal of the disks and upgrading the firmware - you have no idea what other problems may have been created by your actions that may have led to the data being inaccessible.
Had the unit sustained a "normal" disk failure you should have been able to access your data just as if nothing had happened.
I have not had a disk fail in my DNS-323, but I have simulated disk failures by ejecting a disk, both with the power on & with the power off, and the unit responds exactly as I would expect (and have described above) - even if a disk is removed in the middle of a read or write operation, there is no interruption to the task and the only indication that something untoward has happened has been the disk failure alerts - the email, the front panel LED, and the status page.

Actually, none of my HDD failed. They are perfectly fine. It is simply the DNS323 being unable to recognize the same disks that were removed and reinserted.
I asked the question just in case someday should one of my disk fail. In which case i would hope that the single remaining one could be read without rebuilding the data.
