DVD & CD Library Software

Hi all,

Now that I have this DNS-323, 1TB in bay 1 (soon to be 2TB with the second bay), and gigabit networking/Wireless N system (see my prior post http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t565-Hitac … ility.html), I've been thinking on how I should use it.

The main reason I bought the DNS-323 was to be able to store/back-up my DVD/laserdisc movies (more than 800 titles) and 1,500+ CDs on it with no degradation in video or sound quality, in other words in perfect or near perfect quality as the original source.  I am wondering if anyone is using their system in a similar manner and could recommend Movie/CD library software that would download DVD and CD artwork and data, along with data from IMDb or Amazon, similar in nature to what Windows Media Player does when you rip a CD.  I would like to store all my movies and CDs (NOT in a lossy format like MP3) so I can enjoy their sound fidelity and video as if I were playing the original source CD or DVD through my audiophile entertainment center.  I am tired of having shelves of DVDs, Laserdiscs and CDs.  If I can access these on my 323 I can pack them away in boxes.

If I use the "black box" primarily for this function, then RAID may not be such a necessity in favor of more available storage space for all that media.  But then it would be such a pain to configure the same thing over again if one or both of the 1TB hard disks were to fail. neutral

I just bought, but haven't really experimented with, SlySoft's AnyDVD and CloneDVD (http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html), but those are not library or jukebox-like software.  The D-Link DSM-510 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=542#) doesn't look like it does what I want.  Collectorz Movie Collector looks like it may do the trick (http://www.collectorz.com/movie/dvd_library.php).  Is anyone doing anything like this and can give me some recommendations?

Thanks,
Ed

Re: DVD & CD Library Software

I use [the free version of] DVD Profiler http://www.invelos.com/ to catalog my DVDs which I kept on a shelf.  I always thought MainLobby from Cinemar http://www.cinemaronline.com/index.html was the ultimate media organization / home automation software. If money were not object, MainLobby + additional plugins can do almost anything you could want.

For me, it takes ~40 min to transfer 1 DVD to hard drive (1:1 video_ts) [I use DVDdecrypter].   I estimate ~100 DVDs can fit on a 1TB drive.  If dedicate 4 hrs a day to this activity, I can transfer 6 DVD discs a day, and at that pace it would take me ~16 days to fill up the 1TB drive.  For ~$400, I could buy a backup 1TB drive and not have to repeat 16 days of DVD transfers.  For me, the pain of transferring all that media would require at least an external, (off-line), USB storage drive with a duplicate copy as backup, since the data would not change once transfered from DVDs to the hard drive.

Re: DVD & CD Library Software

Thanks Mig for the great information.  I was googling for 2 days but never came across DVD Profiler or MainLobby.  Perhaps I did not know what to search for.  I'll check them out tonight.  DVD Profiler Mobile looks extremely attractive with its ability to sync your computer and PDA, as currently I download a .pdf file of my video collection to my smartphone with Windows Mobile.

As for AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, I tried them last night.  CloneDVD2 (with AnyDVD in the background to strip copy protection) produces the Video_TS and Audio_TS folder structure found on DVDs.  AnyDVD can be used alone to do the same thing, although it only produces the Video_TS folder.  I don't remember when using both AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 together how long it took to copy a 2-hour movie in high quality.  I think it was around 40 minutes.  Using AnyDVD alone seemed to take twice as long.  I don't know why.  I need to do some more experimenting.  I originally got AnyDVD to view a lot of Region Code 2 DVDs I bought in London when I was there during the holidays.

Is DVD Profiler or MainLobby able to access this folder structure off of my hard drive and play the movie after it is pointed to it?

As for backups, I see your point and appreciate your advice when noting the estimates on how long it would take to rebuild the library.  Definitely something to consider.

Thanks again for this information!

Ed

Re: DVD & CD Library Software

DVD Profiler is just a catalog program with no playback capabilities.  MainLobby (actually the DVDLobby 3 part) can play media from hard drive, as well as from DVD carousel changers.  I never used MainLobby/DVDLobby, so I'm no expert in it's functionality.  Cinemar has a lot of documentation on their web site.

Thinking about the backup storage, two 500GB drives (~$120 each at newegg) could backup the data on the 1TB drive and save you ~$150 compared to getting another 1TB drive.
