cannot stat "directory name" Input/output error

I was removing the old backup directories (incremental backup created by rsync) from my secondary drive when I got Input/output error. I cannot remove some of the directories. I can rename them though. Is it any way to get rid of this error?

Re: cannot stat "directory name" Input/output error

Have tried to unmount the file system and to run e2fsck again but it doesn't work:

/ # umount -l /dev/sdb2
/ # e2fsck -v /dev/sdb2
e2fsck 1.41.0 (10-Jul-2008)
e2fsck: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sdb2
Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?
/ #

Have checked that the file system is really unmounted now. It looks like it is unmounted:

/ # df
Filesystem           1k-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
rootfs                    9911      7500      1899  80% /
/dev/root                 9911      7500      1899  80% /
/dev/loop0                5760      5760         0 100% /sys/crfs
/dev/sda2            960404324 409763540 550640784  43% /mnt/HD_a2
/dev/sda4               497861     11544    486317   2% /mnt/HD_a4
/dev/sdb4               497861        21    497840   0% /mnt/HD_b4

What am I doing wrong?
