Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

DLink DNS-323 RAID 1 NAS - Best Practises and Uses

I want to use my DNS-323 as a RAID 1 NAS storage. I installed 2 X 2TB WD drives in a RAID 1 setup. I have few questions on how to best use it.

I have installed funPlug, ssh, lighttpd (Steps 1..9) as detailed in http://dns323.kood.org/howto:1st_steps.

Q1. What Protocol (ssh, ftp, sharefolder etc) should I use to copy data over to the DND-323?

Q2.  Where and how do I copy the data from my computer that I want to keep on my NAS? There are several folders created under folder Volume_1>ffp, I am not sure where I should start putting my personal data (that I want to have network accessible). Please advice...

Q3.  The DNS-323 utility (provided on the software CD) to map the shared drive does not ask any passwords. Which is strange!! I want to make the data more secure, so that it asks for some kind of authentication(password) before allowing sharing (read or write). How do I achieve this?

I am primarily a WinXP user with limited knowledge of linux/unix.

Please advice...

Thanks

I am a beginner myself, but I hope you find these answers helpful:

I think it really depends on your backup method. If you are using commercial backup programs, most of them should let you backup over to a windows network share, so the simplest is to create a user (say backup) and provide access to a backup share (Volume_1/backup). You will then be able to connect to this share using the backup user and select this as the destination for your backups.

You don't want to put any data under Volume_1/ffp directory, leave that for the funplug to manage. When you create a new share (under Advanced->"Network Access"), you can create new SMB shares and give access to the uses. Each share is has a root directory that can simply point to a directory of the same name at the root of Volume_1 (click Browse, expand Volume_1 and click the new folder icon to create a new folder and select it before clicking OK). You can browse to this folder from your windows m/c and copy data to it. Or point your backup software to this as the destination.

If you don't already have a backup program, see these links:

My guess is that you haven't yet changed your admin password. While this secures the administration itself, make sure to also create one or more users with password for individual shares.

There IS a manual too you know. Read the manual, go into the web admin and you can set all your users, access rights, folder ownerships... you know, all the basic features that made linux famous for security. You can make 10 users, all with different folders they individually own, and you can make some of them part of groups that can give them access to those group owned folders which other participant's whom are part of that group can also access. There can be multiple groups as well. You may not even need the manual, just log into the GUI and I think it even has 'help' pages right in there to help with setup.
