Hi, I love using frodo II with funplug so i can periodically umount the drives and run e2fsck. However, a custom fw of that sort is only available (as far as i know) as a modified version of fw v1.05.
I'm upgrading to 2tb drives so I need fw version 1.08, but I don't want to give up built in telnet for umounting.
Any ideas?

The 1.08 has build in disk check. So you don't need it for that.

Interesting. I suppose I'll have to see if this built in disk check will suit me.
thanks for the reply.
Regardless of that excellent information, is it possible to add telnet only to FW 1.08? Just curious to what would need to be done. I've read alot on building custom FW but I haven't read anything about using the stock 1.08 and just adding one feature (telnet). Is it necessary to have the source of 1.08? Can 1.08 be modified as easily as 1.05 or other Dlink FW?

Bump.
I'd like to see someone answer those questions too; as I'm about to go from v1.07 to v1.09 on my C1 hardware.

"Bump"ing is a common practice in bringing an unsolved/unanswered problem/question back to attention.

Don't tweak the firmware, too much of a hassle...
Look at this: http://dns323.kood.org/howto:telnet (especially the improved one that start from ramdisk)
seems exactly what you want.
My advice: use 1.09 and this.

KnightFire, asking once should suffice.
a friendly hello !!!
well ... there is a scenario where the funplug doesn't seem to help
i lost power and one of my 4 dns323s failed with degraded raid1
i visited your site and checked my hw for serial connectivity ... power them off ... removing the left drive and shining a flashlight into the slot to look for the serial connector ... found them and verified the rev #s ... 2 of them are A1 and 2 of them are B1
by now i made a mistake and inserted one of the drives backwards ... the connectors outwards, so no hw harm ... we all make mistakes, don't we ... maybe not all of us admit them
ran a disk check ... i don't know what i was smoking but i did not notice that the disk light on the false inserted drive was not on ... obviously it failed ... now this dns323 also exhibited a degradation ... legitimately i assume
well i admit that the raid1 mirror config seemed initially like a safe BACKUP solution ... i agree i was wrong for several reasons and i will change to individual drives and manual resync ...
since my main machines run win- flavor ... need it for some of my work hw / sw development (sorry, no linux) ... i do not have a linux box at hand ... i read a lot about the restore or whatever it's called ... one of the buttons on the web gui ... this one mysterious button to fix things and from then on all the data got lost ...
so in my case ... the drives are out of sync ... the volumes do not show up anymore ... AND ... i can NOT apply the funplug anymore ... sad sad sad
NOW there is no way to talk to the dsn323s with linux commands over ethernet or set it up to do so with funplug.
at this point IT WOULD BE VERY HANDY to telnet to it without trying to hack it serially.
i assume that i would be able to resync them or whatever it would be through telnet to do some damage control.
i hate pre-canned boxes with a few simple buttons to make you feel good and when the sh@#t hits the fan you realize how lonely you're out there with what you thought would be a good solution ... or you push a button and play roulette with your data
sorry for the long msg, but maybe some of you can relate.
i took a linux admin class back in 2000 or so and would be able to find my way through it ... but customizing and recompiling linux code and comiling the arm code for a non embedded linux person is too much of a task ... just can't afford the time
i really appreciate all the work you guys did and understand that most of it is not easy ... just wanted to point out my current experience with my still beloved dns323s.
also i have 1.5 tb drives in 3 of them them so i need rev 1.08 or newer
once they are out of sync ... the funplug doesn't work anymore ... then your'e easy telnet options are gone
thanks, cheers EinHexenMeister
p.s danke fuer all die arbeit und info bis jetzt ... danke

hi guys !!!
well i forgot one more Q ... is there a way to put some form of logon with password into the telnet session ... maybe with a pre canned pwd at the beginning and changeable with a script or file holding the desired pwd ... sorry ... i'm not a systems person, just writing firmware ... even for an arm7 ...
just to have some pwd protection
thanks, EinHexenMeister

hi guys !!!
i looked at the drives again today and both seem to have the data available ... don't know what happened yesterday, one of the definitely did not have a Volume_1 visible ... sorry for part of my posts
still it would be a nice idea to have command line access via telnet built into the firmware along with a password
again ... sorry but yesterday it seemed that the one drive did not show it's volume
thanks EinHexenMeister
