Serial interface

Hello,
I am new in this list. I have given a DSM-G600 because nobody was using it. My first approach was discouraging since I was not been able to configure it under linux, in fact I had to downgrade the firmware. I was about to discard the unit when I discover this list. Now I see a device with full of pontential.
I fact, my plans is to make from it the "intelligent part" of a domotic system. To do so I should have a serial connection. I have read some posts in these list that mention it, but I have not found how to do it.
Has anybody put a serial interface in this unit?

I also would like to make a debian-based system, in order to make the upgrading easier, specially the security upgrades. Has anybody tried something similar?

Luis.

And here is picture where you can see battery serial connector (J3) and CPU.

Re: Serial interface

The A232DBH3v adapter came in the mail today.  I took out my tools and started the installation.  It took me about 2 hours from start to finish.  After the installation, I hooked it up to my laptop using a USB-serial cable that I got from BestBuy.  I downloaded TeraTerm, set it to 9600N1, powered up the dsm-g600 unit and it worked.  Yahoo!

Soldering the wires to the small dots on the board was a bit tricky.  But I quickly learned that if I melted some solder on tip of the wires first, clipped off a bit, then used the tip of a small flat screw driver to hold down the tip of the wire onto the dot on the board.  While holding it down, I used the solder iron with the other hand and quicky melted it.  That worked like a charm.

Re: Serial interface

I'm interested in this mod as well. I was wondering if anyone had a part number for the connectors that are currently there?

Re: Serial interface

The connectors that are currently on the board.

As it says in the Howto, some DSMs come with connectors and some don't. Mine has the connectors.

Instead of desoldering the connectors (and bricking the machine in the process smile ) It would be nice to just add a level convertor with a plug for that connector smile

Actually it looks like the picture in your post above (2006-11-17 00:11:41) has those connectors smile

Re: Serial interface

Sorry, I have no idea. Maybe you can take your DSM-G600 to electronics shop and just let them find right one.
