network monitoring tool?

Hi all,

My DNS is being utilized by plenty of people and I'd like to see how many connections are currently active, what kind of bandwidth utilization there is at any given time, etc.

Yes I could do it from my router but that involves separating connected devices and writing a script isolating just the DNS. I am thinking something along the lines of vnstat but wondered if anyone did something along those lines and has a good guide to follow?

Thanks big_smile

Re: network monitoring tool?

Not sure what you'd like to monitor.
You can look under /proc/net, or use netstat. You can also checkout lsof to monitor what files are open.

You can check out vnstat (http://humdi.net/vnstat/) available from Uli's repository: http://ffp.wolf-u.li/
And there's libpcap/tcpdump in the Fonz's repository, but you probably don't want to go down that path.
