XBOX 360 / PS3 and the DNS 323

I'm considering buying an Xbox 360 or a PS3 and a big factor in this decision will be how easily I can stream video off my DNS 323 and what quality it will be. I have found it difficult to find up to date information on this matter and don't have a PS3 or an Xbox 360 to try myself so I thought I would ask you guys.

My setup will probably be to have the console physically connected to a gigabit router which the DNS 323 is also connected to, so with this in mind will I be able to stream HD video off my DNS 323 on either console? Will it be easy to browse my drive? Will I require installing of additional servers (I have fun_plug running so this shouldn't be too much of an issue). Generally, those who do this, what is the feel of this setup? Should I maybe consider buying another media player that can plug in to my DNS 323?

Thanks for any pointers those with experience of this, sorry if this is answered elsewhere, but most posts I found refer to old DNS323/PS3 or XBOX360 firmware and I'm unsure of any changes that have been made!

Edit: I should point out as this is a forum about hacking the dns 323 that I am not happy to hack xbox 360 or ps3 to achieve these results.

Re: XBOX 360 / PS3 and the DNS 323

Hi Andrew-

I have a 360 with the latest updates and a DNS-323 with 1.08 firmware.  I usually use the DNS-323's UPnP server for music only (and my MVIX 760-HD for video), but I switched it to a directory with videos to test your question.  I ran a few avi's through it (don't remember the codec, etc) but the 360 played everything I asked of it.  I don't know if the quality was HD, probably more like DVD quality but everything looked great on my 120" projection screen.  My 360 is connected through a wireless-N also.  I'm sure with your gigabit network the 360 will be able to stream HD easily.  The directories were easy to scroll through and navigate.
Also if you can point me to an easy fun-flug installation guide please do so!  I copied this file, set the attributes, but after booting everything looks the same.  Maybe I don't know how to check if it is working?  ahh well.. oh if anyone knows of a good antenna/tuner combo for my projector so I can drop cable tv let me know!  I'm probably going to get an Mvix Ultio pro also smile

                  good luck-

                        Johnny

Re: XBOX 360 / PS3 and the DNS 323

Hi Andrew

If you want to have one device for gaming, DVD/Blue Ray, and streaming video from DNS-323 it is possible to use PS3 as all in one solution.

The best streaming server is llink (http://www.drak0.com/category/dns323/). it is reasonably responsive even for 1080p files when fast forward at x120.
llink has http interface so you can just use PS3 Internet browser to navigate through directories.

On top of llink you can put YAMJ (http://www.mediaplayersite.com/) generated html library of your movies (if you like to keep things organized and have a movie collection with descriptions, rating, fanart, etc.) served with lighttpd web server (again you just use Internet browser to navigate through the library).

The down side of using PS3 as a media player is that all video files have to be in format that PS3 can play (which are avi divx/xvid, mp4, mpeg, vob).
mkv HD files have to be re-packaged into vob with mkv2vob (http://www.mkv2vob.com/) and you have to have a receiver capable of decoding DTS (as PS3 does not decode/down convert DTS sound when streaming). It also does not display captions unless hard coded in video.

So if you really want to have all in one solution it is feasible to do that with PS3 (with some limitations) but if you are just looking for a media player it is a lot less hassle to go for a dedicated device.

Regards,
vg

Have a look here http://dns323.kood.org/howto:ffp for installation instructions. Choose the Fonz version.

i dont agree. Using UPNP-AV Streaming software ist much more convenient to use as you dont need a browser but instead use the xmb to browse. i use mediatomb because it has a sophisticated javascript api for organizing files.

I started with using UPNP/xbm (tried both built-in or mediatomb) but switched to llink/YAMJ as fast-forwarding of HD files was extremely slow.  llink does not have this problem. I do not use its http interface often as I prefer YAMJ Movie Jukebox which I modified to my liking (a little XSLT programming).

I've been using ushare on my DNS-323 for HD streaming to my 360.  Works like a charm.

llink wiki: http://www.lundman.net/wiki/index.php/Llink
YAMJ wiki: http://code.google.com/p/moviejukebox/w/list
YAMJ forum: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/forum … php?fid=70

It seems I can't attached my skin here...I uploaded it on Rapid-Share
http://rapidshare.com/files/399381116/ps3.rar.html

You will find my llink/YAMJ config files inside the archive as well.

Re: XBOX 360 / PS3 and the DNS 323

I confess that YAMJ is very attractive, by cons via the browser of the PS3 sad

Oxygène (do you speak french ?), I tried to setup mediatomb on my DNS-323, but the scripts are complicated, the thumbnails don't work, I can read .mkv files (I don't know what changed) and there is no way to put a PIN on directories. I'm looking on Google, but I don't have complete information to make it work... Can you help me ?

Obveron, do you have more information about uShare ?

True, the script api requires programming knowledge. for me thumbnails work, but i run mediatomb on native debian linux on the dns-323 (with ffmpegthumnailer libary avaiable etc) i can share my config, but you probably have to compile mediatomb and its depencies yourself (or ask fonz to do it)

i guess you mean you cannot? the makroska container format is unfortunatly not supported by the ps3. you need to remux the files. you can use the tools mkv2vob for this.
a password protection is not intentend in the upnp standard i think. no idea on that.

I set YAMJ library as a default page in PS3 browser and set browser in full screen mode so it is just one click away from xmb and browser itself is not visible. My skin can be navigated with PS3 remote.
Cons of YAMJ is not browser but necessity to run YAMJ (on a computer connected to DNS 323) to add new movies (can be scheduled of course).

Re: XBOX 360 / PS3 and the DNS 323

Hey vg any chance you could re-upload your skin/config files? The link on rapidshare is dead.  Thanks for the information you provided, I was able to get yamj up and running on my dns323 and can view from the PS3 but the default skin doesn't fill the screen and I can't get it working properly editing it and Aeon movie wall doesn't work.  thanks again!

Hi mcom8,
Here is new link:

Have you tried YAYMan? It is a nice addition to YAMJ. Let me know if you need any help with my skin.
