DNS-323 & Zune & Ipod

I use an Ipod, my wife uses a Zune. Currently we each have an identical data base of MP3 files on each of our computers. I am on the verge of buying a DNS-323 so we can have a single music library to share and eliminate the time and effort I now spend keeping both libraries synchronized on both of our machines machines.

All our music is stored as standard MP3 files in a single folder. All music ripped from our CDs and purchased from Itunes is immediately converted into standard MP3 files so there is no issue using it on the Zune. We do not purchase music from the Zune music store so we have no compatibility issues in this regard with the Ipod.

Can the Zune software recognize a music library on a network drive?

I do not intend to set up a so called "Itunes server" but simply just maintain a folder on the DNS-323 containing our MP3 library that will be accessible from both of our computers. This brings me to my next question: what is the advantage of an "Itunes server" if I can maintain the music in a simple data folder on the DNS-323?

Re: DNS-323 & Zune & Ipod

If the Zune SW can read from a network mapped drive, then it can work with your music library on the DNS-323.  You could test this by mapping a shared drive from your wife's computer on your computer, and then see if the Zune software can see the drive letter.

The iTunes server would be interesting/useful if you want to play the music from computers in your home using iTunes (run iTunes on the computer and it will see the music on the DNS-323 as shared music).  It didn't sound like that was a big deal to you...but you can play the music on the DNS-323 from the computers using any music playing SW...Windows Media player, etc.  BTW...you could switch to Media Monkey as your music SW...it can work with iPods and may also support the Zune.  IMHO, superior to iTunes in most every way.  There are free and $19 gold versions.

If you are primarily looking for a way to store the music, as opposed to playing it, the iTunes server isn't much use/interest to you.
