Disk powers off and than restarts in a loop

I read about this on the forum , but there is no clear answer or solution, so I will ask again:

My disk (WD 500Gb) turns off after the power off time (set up at 5 minutes) and than automatically restarts in about 15 seconds, for another 5 minutes spinning time, than off, and so on
Basically the drive does not go to sleep as it should.
This happens with the network cable disconnected (and connected) so this means nobody on the network gives the drive a command to start, since the cable is disconnected.

I already exchanged the DNS with another one, same result. Which means the product has a flaw in design in my opinion.

I have latest firmware (1.03) but that makes no difference from original firmware

Anybody has the solution for this? I cannot afford to have my hard drive spin 24 hours a day for no reason.

thank you

Re: Disk powers off and than restarts in a loop

It's amazing that dlink lets this bug exist for so long without fixing.
I've been in contact with their support - no results...
please contact them so they'll know it's an urgent bug to fix. Otherwise we can never know if it's going to be fixed in the next fw release.

Re: Disk powers off and than restarts in a loop

I deleted the directory /lpt (or something like that) from the drive root - as advised by somebody on this forum

The problem did go away, now the drive stays off as it should.

Not sure yet if the printserver still works under this circumstances, I did not test that yet.

Thank you all

Re: Disk powers off and than restarts in a loop

Hi, just like to add a little more info to the forum

I had the same issue with the drive running all the time and did some research. It is the file "lock.pr" that is written to the lpd folder every 10 minutes causing the activity and spinups.
Using fw1.02.
I think it started when I tried the printer server just to test the functionality some months ago. So I checked the lpd folder
as suggested in this forum and there were five files in there:

cfA490DNS-323
dfA490DNS-323
hfA490
lock.pr
unspooler.pr

Just a guess here: the .pr files might be system files so to be able to see them you must change setting to show all files, the default setting in windows is to hide system files!!
The first three is probably the printing data that failed to be printed.
The unspooler is my attempt to abort the printing.
The lock.pr file is written every 10 minutes to this folder causing the disk activity.
So I just deleted everything in the folder and voila, the disk spins down as it should.

Hopefully this will help someone else...

Re: Disk powers off and than restarts in a loop

Is there a step by step process for deleting these files?  I know nothing about Linux, so hopefully this is something you can just do via the web interface... or perhaps <cringe> a terminal window on the Mac?

Be gentle... I'm an artist, not a technician smile

Re: Disk powers off and than restarts in a loop

Hi, no need for telnet access or anything fancy...just delete wink
Just look for the dns323 on the network in explorer in windows or whatever you call it in mac. The lpd folder is located in the topmost catalog among the HD and other stuff.

Re: Disk powers off and than restarts in a loop

Thanks!  Unfortunately, I don't see it. There is the print server (in my case, titled "lp"), but there's no access to it... it opens the printer driver stuff.  I've got a Volume_1 directory, but it won't let me go in there (I get a prompt to put in a password, but it won't let me specify the username as it is greyed out and set to "Guest").  So I'm locked out.  Strange and a little frustrating.  Would you kindly have any other suggestions for me?  I'd love to get this drive to sleep.

Re: Disk powers off and than restarts in a loop

I can't test myself at the moment but this folder may be created whenever a printer is connected and installed on the dns printer server.
Do you have a printer connected to the dns and also have a failed printing that is in the printing que?? If not there may be some other process causing the spinup. Disable all servers, itunes upnp and so forth via the web interface, see if this helps.
While you're there check the network access list under the network access tab, it seems you have lost the permission to browse/modify the hd, not so practical wink
