my review of miniDLNA and LG internet connected devices(TV/Blu-ray)

For the past few weeks I've been looking for a new tv that is internet connected and has a built int DLNA client with multiple format/container support (xvid/h.264, avi,mp4,mkv).  In my research I only came across to manufactures, LG and SAMSUNG, that fit my requirements.  Once I narrowed down to these two suppliers, I factored in cost and tv size.  The tv is for the bedroom so I was looking for a 32 in.  Both vendors have 32inchers, but the LG had models significantly cheaper than Samsung.  So I purchased a 32LE5400.

Next I installed and setup the latest miniDLNA from http://www.plord.co.uk/funplug/0.5/ and configured its settings.  With miniDLNA up and running, I was able to view my dns323 and browse the directories I configured as movies, music and pictures.  Music and pictures worked as expected, but I really wanted to test out LG's codec support.  My video files are mainly xvid in avi but I also have a few h.264 in mp4 and xvid in mkv.  Xvid/avi worked fine as did h.264/mp4.  What didn't work was Xvid/mkv.  I double checked the user manual and sure enough mkv is only supported using h.264.  Not a deal breaker for me.

Overall I am very satisfied with the results.  Some other items of note.  The LG comes with an ethernet port or optional (sold separately) wifi usb adapter.  In my tests I used the wifi adapter connecting to a FIOS g router.  I didn't notice and studdering of video during playback.  For those who may be interested in a similar setup, below is a link to supported formats.
