Could it be a defective battery?

Dear forum members, does anybody have an idea what could be causing my DNS-323's memory loss?
My unit was working fine until yesterday.
What happens now:  Sometimes, the blue power LED gets dark and if i access one of the drives, it turns blue again and gets dark again after maybe 15 minutes.
If i leave the unit unaccessed, then it sometimes forgets it name and then i have to go into the web interface (where i still see the correct name) and have to save settings.
When the unit forgets its name, then i can't access the unit anymore via windows explorer, but when re-initiated via the web interface it is again accessible via explorer.

I experienced already for some time, that when the unit was restarted after a mains power interruption, that i had to go through te web interface and re-initiate as described above.
This made me conclude that the unit's name (and maybe a number of other things) are stored in RAM.

Anyway, i haven't opened the unit yet, but from pictures found on this forum, i noticed that there is a CR2032 button cell installed on the unit's PCB.
From there, my idea that this battery may be suspect.

Can somebody confirm this?  Or maybe another hint?

Although power outages are very rare here in Antwerp Belgium, i am using a UPS.

Re: Could it be a defective battery?

The LED going dark is not an issue, that's the power management feature that shuts the disks down when they have not be used for a while, I think the default is 10 minutes, you can change it or disable it as you wish, through the web interface.

The fact that you can see the correct name in the web interface, suggests that the problem is not the DNS-323 forgetting anything, but the rest of your network losing track of it - there are some quirks with linux, which is the OS used by the DNS-323, integrating into a Windows environment (by the way, did you set a workgroup name on the DNS-323) the problem being one of how Windows keeps track of network devices using a browse list.

Re: Could it be a defective battery?

Fordem, thanks for your reply.
Although i registered only today, i was following the DNS-323 topics already for several months.

You are probably right about the power management, but i didn't notice it before (probably didn't pay too much attention to it).

Yes, the DNS-323 was set a workgroup name.  And it has always worked fine.
The workgroup (in my opinion) can't be the reason for having the problem after a mains power interruption.
I also know about the 10 minutes idle period and i have not seen any reason for changing this setting so far.

I'll keep an eye on it and see if the problem persists.
I am an electronics engineer (specialised in RF& microwave techniques), so i am not afraid of opening the box, but i leave it closed if not needed.

Thanks again!
