Experts,
I have a DNS-323 (1.07) that has worked perfectly with two Maxtor 500G HDs in RAID-1 as a network drive for three years. I wanted more storage, so I updated the firmware to 1.09 and bought two Hitachi Deskstar 2Tb drives as replacements.
a. I first tried removing the right Maxtor 500B drive. After powering back up, I could read the remaining Maxtor drive fine.
b. I powered down and put a Hitachi 2Tb drive in the right slot. When I started the DNS-323 it asked me to reformat and I said OK. After some strange results, I could no longer read either drive. (nervious)
c. I pulled out the Hitachi 2Tb drive and repowered and could again read the Maxtor 500G. I made a backup of the data to another HD.
d. I read some more forums, the tried putting the Hitachi 2Tb back in, powered up, skipped the initial format request and used Tools, RAID to format to RAID-1. This formated the 2Tb drive to 500G and I couldn't see data on either. I removed the Hitachi 2Tb and could again read the Maxtor 500G.
e. I formatted each Hitachi 2Tb drive individually (only one installed at a time), and then loaded them both in the DNS-323. They seem to read fine as Standard drives.
f. When I select Tools, RAID, "Set RAID Type and Re-Format", then RAID-1, Next, EXT 2, Next, Enable Auto-Rebuild, Next, OK, 1998, Next, it counts up to 4% or 5% and stops, then eventually says "Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure".
g. I've noticed that when I click the Tools tab, RAID, I have some garbage on the menu below the black "CONFIGURE THE 2ND DRIVE:" line. It says:
<input type="button" style="width:270; heigth: 21" nme="GORAID2"
value="
then a black line:
"ASP ERROR: SYNTAX ERROR AT LINE 1, LINE =>
FORMAT_WIZARD_GETRAIDINFO(8)
then:
format_wizard_GetRaidInfo(8);
I'm running a Dell i7 with Win7 Home Premium 64. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Curt

Try putting the drives into a computer and using the operating system's partition tools (DiskPart) to remove the partitions from the 2TB drives, and then put them both into the DNS-323 and creating a RAID! pair (that is assuming you plan on using RAID1), and then restore the data from your backup.

Thanks for the reply fordem.
I put each Hitachi 2Tb drive in my Dell i7 Win7-64 desktop, and used the Win7 Partition Wizard to remove the two partitions. It said they were not Windows partitions, but removed them quickly. I put the two Hitachi 2Tb drives back in the DNS-323, started, logged in, and followed the on-screen prompts to create a RAID-1 with Auto-Rebuild onthe full drives. It is again stalled at 4%. ??? More help please. Curt

Well - I've experienced that scenario with different drives and that's what worked for me, try formatting one drive by itself, and then add the second and check the box to create a RAID1 array and see what happens.

Thanks fordem,
I had already tried formatting the drives individually, so I decided to try to fix the strange menu garbage on the Tools, RAID page with the new firmware 1.09 load. I downloaded firmware 1.08 and loaded it, but still had the garbage.
So I reloaded firmware 1.07 that I had used previously with my two 500Gb drives RAID-1. After reloading 1.07, the Tools, RAID menu looked normal, with "o Enable Auto-rebuild" and "o Disable Auto-rebuild" choices at the bottom of the page.
Even though the firmware notes said 1.07 only supported 1.5Tb drives, I tried formatting the two Hitachi 2Tb drives RAID-1 and it looks like it did it fine. My Status tab now shows a RAID-1 drive with 1966885Mb available and 24Mb used. Windows Explorer shows the drive as 1.78Tb free.
I reloaded firmware 1.8 and the Tools, RAID menu was still OK, so I reloaded firmware 1.09 and that is OK too. Everything looks OK, but I reformatted the RAID-1 with the latest firmware since only 1.08 and 1.09 say they support 2Tb drives - everything stayed the same.
Apparently the Hitachi 2Tb drives ($99.99 at Fry's) do not have the "4K Clusters" problem. That was going to be my next try if the firmware reload had not worked. Curt
