Beta FW 1.10b of the DNS-323 found

Hello guys,

I found a link to a beta Firmware 1.10b for the DNS-323:

http://www.dlinkhelp.eu/gex75/index.php … BETA%29%2F

According to the release notes the upnp server was exchanged:

v1.10b01        05/28/2010    1. Replace upnp av server with Rovi media server.
                            2. Bugfix : BT causing web crashed issue.

I have flashed the firmware. The DNS-323 seems to move the files faster. The overall file performance was not increased, but the average data transfer speed might be higher. I feel the NAS much quicker in reaction and moving of the files. After the update the DNS-323 lost the media file location and I wanted to add it again. But I haven't managed it that the NAS is updating this information. By means when I choose the media directory the upnp client (LG BD390) cannot find any files inside. This means the DNS does not update its file information.

Try the FW and post your experiences.

Regards

Thomas

That firmware is quite out of date. That is also not the current media server and will not be released in final version. The official 1.10 release will be coming up soon. The reason your media server isn't working is because it was a separate addon.

Re: Beta FW 1.10b of the DNS-323 found

Dear Dlink,

these are really good news. Do you know when this firmware will be released ("soon" is a little outdated and was already announced many times...) and can you tell anything about the changes and features compared to FW 1.09? Is it possible to release a changelog NOW? For example native support for 4kB blocks of the latest 2 TB hard disks.

Thank you and regards!

Re: Beta FW 1.10b of the DNS-323 found

1. Replace unpnp av server which is DLNA v1.5 certified
2. No password is needed under Vista/Win7 in Open Mode.
3. Extend the accessible file and folder of FTP server from 2000 to 10,000.
4. Bonjour is built-in.
5. Start to rebuild automatically in Normal to Raid1 migration even "Auto Rebuild" is not being set by user.

Here are a couple things from the change log. The full list of changes is not prepared at this time.

As stated above we did NOT integrate the Rovi media server for UPNP AV. We integrated our new stack that is DLNA 1.5 certified. It looks identical to how things look now but is now fully DLNA compatible.

Planned to go into lab testing this week for formal final release at the moment. We are trying to get in one last improvement before the lab submission though so testing may be delayed until beginning of next week.

Are there going to be external beta testers as with the last few releases?

I will post the final release in the beta section on our forums when it is done (prior to going through full lab testing). Anyone is welcome to grab it at that point if they want to try it.

Re: Beta FW 1.10b of the DNS-323 found

@ Dlink:
Could you please consider commenting out the "using deprecated SCSI ioctl" warning in <linux>\drivers\scsi\scsi_ioctl.c ?

It's around line 406 in the 2.6.12.6 kernel sources and it fills up de /var/log/messages with warnings when using smartd.

Thanks in advance!

Code:

    /* Check for deprecated ioctls ... all the ioctls which don't
     * follow the new unique numbering scheme are deprecated */
    switch (cmd) {
    case SCSI_IOCTL_SEND_COMMAND:
    case SCSI_IOCTL_TEST_UNIT_READY:
    case SCSI_IOCTL_BENCHMARK_COMMAND:
    case SCSI_IOCTL_SYNC:
    case SCSI_IOCTL_START_UNIT:
    case SCSI_IOCTL_STOP_UNIT:
/*        printk(KERN_WARNING "program %s is using a deprecated SCSI "
               "ioctl, please convert it to SG_IO\n", current->comm); */
        break;
    default:
        break;
    }

(or maybe publish the GPL source, or at least the kernel config file so I can do it myself ;-) )

Re: Beta FW 1.10b of the DNS-323 found

I suffered from the same problem and so run smart periodically from a cron job instead of using the daemon.  And while I'd prefer to use the daemon, wouldn't the correct fix be to change the smart code to not use those IOCTL's?   Changing the kernel code to cope with an application problem seems odd.  Has anyone asked the smart authors about this?  If I wanted to use the smartd badly enough, I'd probably attempt to build it myself for the NAS and change the code there, instead of disabling the message in the kernel.

Also, couldn't you change the message level in the conf file for syslog or change the console loglevel if not using syslog?

It will support 4k cluster size on final release. For full support this would require a format of both drives (in order to align). IPv6 will not be supported at this time.

It has 'a' fix for 'a' fan issue. Which one are you referring to specifically so I can verify?

Re: Beta FW 1.10b of the DNS-323 found

Hello Dlink,

great to hear that a new firmware is comming. A lot of us have been eager to see this sign of continued support from your company on this nice little device.

Reading your small preview of the changelog I was eager to learn more about plans on fixing open bugs (see "1.08 ongoing issues" - sticky topic - in the official DLINK beta forum http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=11993.0).

Personally I would like to finally see a rock-solid add-on providing really stable NFS-support:
The current NFS-addon is not working in a reliable and stable manner for me and others. CIFS is stable, but working really slow (only 1-2MB/s (read from DNS-323) compared to 5-6 MB/s for an NFS download) on my two (K)Ubuntu-10.04.1 laptops

I also would be interested in hearing if there are plans to replace the current kernel with a more recent (preferrably long-term-support) version.

Can you please give us some more infos prior to official beta-launch of 1.10 regarding these topics?

Yes, my question was a bit vague. Here's some more detail. My DNS-323 Rev. C1, running the 1.08 firmware. I've set Fan control to Auto. Occasionally (i.e. every 2-3 days) I find the fan running continuously, although the status page's temperature reading is quite low (41C/105F or even lower). To work-around this, I go to the power settings and just hit save settings. That causes the fan to work at full speed for a couple of seconds and then it turns off, as it should've been.

If I'm not mistaken, when other users reported similar issues either here, on this forum, or on the official d-link forum (can't remember where) they noted that it might be because of some bad interaction with the ntp server. I'm using the ntp server.

I'll gladly provide more detail, if you require.

Edit: It just now happened again. The temp reading is 89°F / 32°C.

1.
Does that mean that DNS-323 new FW will support 3TB drives (and bigger as they emerge)? I mean that its not only the 4KB issue it is also the >2TB issue.

Will there be speed issues with the 4K drives in the new FW?
When I added a 2TB 4K drive I had to reformat it to sub 4K clusters to get a decent speed out of the 2TB drive WD Caviar Green (not in support list due to 4K clusters but works after linux reformat).

2.
Will there be a possibilty to add more than one directory for the UPNP AV server? If you have 2 drives and dont want to share root, it would be nice to be able to add serveral paths to scan for media i think (and I guess more peeps agree). Today its half useless since you can only choose root OR 1 dir.

Also will there be a possibility to set how often it should scan for new media or even better be able to set it at a certain time with for example two simoultanous choices like:
weekdays xx:xx
+
weekends xx:xx ?

3.
Will DLNA v1.5 fix the problems that occur when connection Sony PS3 to DNS-323 UPnP AV server? There is a DLNA error code that appears very often when checking content.

4. Will there be a neater network access mode. Today (FW 1.08) if 3 users should have different rights for a folder you will get 3 shares of the same folder with the addition _1 _2 which is really....un-neat to say the least smile
Why not just show ONE folder with the original name and block/allow interaction depenidng on users/groups RWX rights?

5. Would it be possible for you guys to release an addon to be able to use the USB port for USB-drives/sticks? I have seen some mods here on the forum that seem to work depending on drive, but it would be neat if you could include an addon with compability list for hardware smile

Best regards
Boogieman

Re: Beta FW 1.10b of the DNS-323 found

It has been quite some time now since i asked a couple of questions.
Is there any anser you can supply?
Are you working on the issues?
Will there ever be a 1.10 stable relase - rumours on forums says Dlink has totally abandonded the DNS-323 support and will leave 1.10_B10 as the last available release. Is this true and in that case WHY? (a lot of disappointment is spreading and people leave the Dlink product line due to things like those should they happen...some allready did from what I read and go for synology and Netgear instead)
I love the DNS-323 with transmission running fluid on it, but still wonder about the remaining issues I posted above.
Especially the support for 3-4 Tb drives that are available now.
From my understanding the 4Kb issue is for 2Tb drives. Above 2Tb the Legazy adressing is a second problem that is a tougher nut to crack I guess. Do you have the knowledge to solve it or not?

This issue is solved (http://sites.google.com/site/altfirmware/) and http://dns323.kood.org/forum is not a Dlink official forum.
