Just bought a DNS-323 and set it up last night. Out of the box, the thing worked flawlessly, no problems. I've got two 500 GB drives (Samsung SpinPoint, T series, HD501LJ 7200 RPM 16 MB buffer, SATA 3.0 GB/s) in a RAID 1 array.
I've read posts here where the format will hang at 94% or other points in the process. Mine hangs right at the very start with any firmware other than 1.00.
On DLink's support website, »support.dlink.com/products/view.···NS%2D323 , they say it's important to upgrade to the latest firmware (v. 1.03).
So I did. When I went to reformat the array, the re-format page hung-up - it appeared the re-format was unsuccessful, so I re-flashed the firmware and tried again - same thing. You click, "Format drives" and the format page freezes. No re-format status, no "Percent Complete...", no nothing.
I tried several other firmware versions, same thing. The format page freezes, and nothing happens.
Then I flashed back to the shipping firmware and the re-format works perfectly.
Even though the newer firmware re-formats seemed to fail, you could access the drives and the device. I think the re-formats did nothing at all; I am running on the format done under firmare 1.00.
I sent DLink's tech support an email probably almost 48 hours ago, and have had no response.
I called the "24 Hours, 7 Days A week" tech support line (877-453-5465) - you get a recorded message, "All circuits busy, please try back later" message. I've tried maybe a half-dozen times in the last day and gotten that message every time.
Is there a way to successfully format the drives with a newer firmware? Or must I run the shipping firmware?
Thanks.

Try calling D-Link's tech support, see what they suggest - you have some sort of a problem - I have been able to format any disk I've tried so far, with whatever firmware I've had at the time.
My DNS-323 shipped with either 1.00 or 1.01 - it was too long ago to remember clearly, I have upgraded to each new firmware revision as it has been released, and I have formatted one or more disks on each revision, mostly smaller (< 250 GB) disks.

I have also succesfully formatted in ext2 two 250Gb Samsung HD's in RAID1:
- First time in 1.01 when I received the box
- Second time when I moved to 1.02b
- Third time when I moved to 1.03 (apparently, it was not necessary this time, but as the disks were empty, I did it anyway)
I did not have any problem with this.

Have you tried using Mozilla FireFox to access the admin interface?
I couldn't complete a format with MSIE7, but had no problems when using FF2

Now that you mention that - I believe if you have a popup blocker active, you could be left with the impression that the format doesn't work - if I remember correctly it pops up a new window with the format status.

Thanks for the responses.
I've been using IE6 - and yeah, I do have a couple popup blockers active.
Right now I've got firmware 1.01 loaded and it's formatting okay.
After it gets done, I'll upgrade to the other FWs, sequentially, using Firefox, and see iff that makes a diff.

Yeah, Firefox did the trick. Must have been the popup blockers in IE6.
Thanks a bunch.
