Windows cannot see my Alt-F flashed DNS-323

I installed the firmware (after successful "try-it") on my A1 box.  (I used the Alt-F-0.1B6+.bin).

When I did the "try it" version things seemed OK.  I remember having a little trouble getting windows to see the DNS and I think it was running the "Run user script" under Services->User that finally allowed windows to see it.  I also had to do some work configuring Samba...

I have the box booting up after flashing and I can get into the web-app to configure it.

Anyway now, when I try to "Run user script", nothing happens.  It always says, "stopped".  The same thing happens when I try to "Run ffp initialization script" under Services->System.  I've tried completely removing and reinstalling both the ffp and alt-f packages thinking maybe I needed a different version of something.

I'm not sure what is the minimal amount of "stuff" I need on the box for windows to see it the way it did the DNS with DLink Firmware.   This is probably on the first page of some manual, but I cannot find it.

Otherwise I can telnet in and ftp seems to work as well.  Just no hint of it's existence on the network as far as Windows is concerned.

I feel so close to dns-323 nirvanna.  sad

BTW, whats the maximum size of drive I can stuff in this thing with the alt-f firmware?

Thanks guys

Re: Windows cannot see my Alt-F flashed DNS-323

Some more info after a good sleep:

This is what happens when I attempt to run the user script:

Mar  6 09:56:15 DNS-323 user.notice root: Services status:
Mar  6 09:56:15 DNS-323 user.notice root: user stopped.
Mar  6 09:56:15 DNS-323 user.notice root: ffp stopped
Mar  6 09:56:15 DNS-323 user.notice root: vsftpd stopped
Mar  6 09:56:15 DNS-323 user.notice root: dropbear stopped
Mar  6 09:56:15 DNS-323 user.notice root: smbd stopped
Mar  6 09:56:15 DNS-323 user.notice root: rpc.statd stopped
Mar  6 09:56:15 DNS-323 user.notice root: nfsd stopped
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: inadyn stopped
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: ntpd stopped
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: dnsmasq stopped
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: inetd running
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: /etc/init.d/S30backup: no configuration file, exiting
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: mdadm stopped
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: smartd stopped
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: atd stopped
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: crond stopped
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: sysctrl running
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: urandom stopped
Mar  6 09:56:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: syslogd running

Maybe the S30backup config file not existing is a problem?   It looks to me like this file is related to a backup service, so I'm guessing its nothing...

The more time I spend, the more Im starting to think that when I run that user script, its never supposed to show as "started" since it just runs and then quits when finished.  Am I right about that?  On the other hand the first line of that log above is:

Mar  6 09:56:15 DNS-323 user.notice root: user stopped.

I'm also thinking more and more that there is just some ffp service that I need to run to make windows see this drive in it's network the same way it does with the factory firmware.

The next thing I notice in the log is this recurring message:

6 11:24:52 DNS-323 daemon.info sysctrl: sysctrl: open /etc/misc.conf: No such file or directory

indeed there is no misc.conf file in my etc folder.  Whats it for?  do I need it?

Re: Windows cannot see my Alt-F flashed DNS-323

OK, so to add some more to my tale:

I installed the ffp service SNMP since that looked like the obvious choice to have a shot at making the dns visible on the network.

rebooted the dns and this was in the log:

Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: Starting inetd: OK.
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: Starting ffp: * /ffp/start/syslogd.sh inactive * /ffp/start/SERVERS.sh inactive * /ffp/start/portmap.sh inactive * /ffp/start/unfsd.sh inactive * /ffp/start/nfsd.sh inactive * /ffp/start/ntpd.sh inactive * /ffp/start/LOGIN.sh ina
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: Services status:
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: user stopped.
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: ffp stopped                                   <- This doesn't look good.  How can SNMP be running if ffp isnt running.
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: vsftpd stopped
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: dropbear stopped
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: smbd stopped
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: rpc.statd stopped
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: nfsd stopped
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: inadyn stopped
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: ntpd stopped
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: dnsmasq stopped
Mar  6 12:08:41 DNS-323 user.notice root: inetd running
Mar  6 12:08:42 DNS-323 user.notice root: /etc/init.d/S30backup: no configuration file, exiting
Mar  6 12:08:42 DNS-323 user.notice root: mdadm stopped
Mar  6 12:08:42 DNS-323 user.notice root: smartd stopped
Mar  6 12:08:42 DNS-323 user.notice root: atd stopped
Mar  6 12:08:42 DNS-323 user.notice root: crond stopped
Mar  6 12:08:42 DNS-323 user.notice root: sysctrl running
Mar  6 12:08:42 DNS-323 user.notice root: urandom stopped
Mar  6 12:08:42 DNS-323 user.notice root: syslogd running
Mar  6 12:08:43 DNS-323 user.notice root: Starting user: OK.

I ran chmod 777 ffp -R because I thought that maybe something wasn't executable.  Now things work similarly, but I get this, although everything seems to function as before:

Mar  6 13:11:16 DNS-323 user.notice root: [truncated] Starting ffp: * /ffp/start/syslogd.sh ... WARNING: syslogd: Already running WARNING: klogd: Already running * /ffp/start/SERVERS.sh ... * /ffp/start/portmap.sh ... Starting /ffp/sbin/rpc.portmap  * /ffp/start/unfsd.sh

Anyway, I went into telnet and tried to run "/ffp/start/snmpd.sh start" and got the error: "ffp/etc/snmp/snmpd.conf Required file not found or not readable."

Once again, I look inside ffp/etc and there is no snmpd.conf file.

Am I on the right track here thinking I need this service running to get windows to see my dns 323 on the network?  Building my own snmpf.conf file doesn't sound like a lot of fun.  Is there somewhere I can get an appropriate file?
