Upgrade from 1.05 to...

Hello! I have a question about safety of upgrading a firmware from 1.05 to a newer version. I have a very important data on my hard drives inside DNS-323 (2x1TB) and I can't back it up in case of emergency. I would like to upgrade firmware becouse it has a very interesting capabilities but i won't do is if there is even a slight chance of losing data or make drives unaccesable (the need of reformat).

So my concerns are:
- is it safe for ma data to upgrade firmware with HDD's inside DNS-323 while upgrading or without them?
- are those drives will be visable after firmware upgrade? (reformat is not an option!)
- which firmware is most stable and most functional as well?
- is there a procedure of upgrading steps (1.05 -> 1.06 -> etc...) or straight from 1.05 -> 1.09.

Re: Upgrade from 1.05 to...

You say you won't do it if there is even a slight chance of losing data - well - that slight chance exists even if you leave the DNS-323 sitting in a corner unplugged - it doesn't even have to be on.  You can lose your data even if you don't upgrade the firmware - the next power outage could do it.

If your data is that important - find a way to back it up - other than that upgrade at your own risk.

Makes no difference, the risks are the same.
> - are those drives will be visable after firmware upgrade? (reformat is not an option!)
They should be, but I wouldn't guarantee it

From my point of view, none is more or less stable.

Either way works - 1.05 direct to 1.09 might have less risk since it's one flash erase/write cycle, but, there is still some risk of a failure during the flash.

And in case you're curious - I'm running the 1.10 beta.

Re: Upgrade from 1.05 to...

Thanx for answer, I know what you mean. Backup of over 1800GB of data via 100 Mbit router is something I would to avoid. I probably won't upgrade now and wait till the 1.10 loose the 'beta' to make sure it's more safe and then I upgrade straight from 1.05 to 1.10. So I'll wait now and fingers crossed later. wink
