I have my DNS-323 set as a media-server over a home network. Everything seems to work fine except for time lag when opening a MKV. file. When I click to open an MKV the DNS-323 hangs for 30sec-1min. The network LED on the DNS-323 blinks during hang, then hard-drive LEDs start blinking once playback starts. Playback is smooth and seamless once it starts. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. I've tried various media servers jumbo frames etc, but the lag persists.

I am using -DNS-323 ext3 mirrored drives(2TB x2) firmware 1.09
-Gigabit router 1000T
-Windows XP on HTPC - connected to TV

Hi,

I've heard that 2TB disks have problem with access time (4k sector disk alignment problems vith dns-323).

If you can, test your MKVs with 2 HDs lower size in your nas, and report your results.

I have already resolved my issue. It turns out that my DNS-323 NAS was not really causing the problem after all. I had to adjust software settings in KMplayer ( NAS + KMplayer + MKV = playback glitch). I am happy to report that MKV playback from mapped network drive (DNS-323 NAS) works flawlessly now with KMplayer.

I am not using "WD advanced format 4k sector disks" so I can't comment on that. I am using 2 mirrored Seagate HDDs 2TB green series 5900RPM ($60 each !! boxing week), they seem to work quite well.

I am using two Samsung F4 2TB 4K drives formatted with v1.10 beta and have no delay accessing 5GB 1080P mkv files with VLC player or XBMC.

Don't get me wrong, I love KMplayer and I highly recommend it. It has a billion adjustments settings and tweaks that can be overwhelming for some people, but in the end you can make it behave exactly the way you want it to.

i have 2 x 1.5 TB connected to 2 clients (2 x win7 ultimate) using gigabit lan samba.
as software player i use media player classic & core avc on a rather old HTPC using on board hardware acceleration for .mkv.
apart from a few glitches here and there it runs perfect.

i dumped kmplayer and vlc beacause my onboard graphics chip is not supported.

Interesting that you say that mastervol, I too am running an HTPC with older parts (Pentium4 - 8x AGPslot). The only thing allowing me to run high definition video is Hardware-Acceleration on video card. That is exactly why I use KMplayer, I use the 'media player classic' video decoder (MPCVideoDec.ax) in KMplayer to force Hardware-Accelleration. Works great!

no 'core avc' here, just pure hardware decoding on video card (ATI)
