DNS-323 dropping connection every few minutes

Hi,
Did a search looking for a similar discussion but couldn't find one, so apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere.

I have a DNS-323, about 3-4 years old, firmware 1.08. Use it for serving video/music/photos to various devices around my house - X-Box, iPad, iMac.

Over the last few weeks the connection between these various devices and the DNS-323 has started to drop intermittently. It used to be every few hours, now it's at least a couple of times an hour when viewing video, listening to music. E.g. when I'm connected to it with Samba on my iMac, listening to music in iTunes, I regularly get a 'Connection to the following drives lost' message. I am able to reconnect straight away and continue where I left off. However, this is obviously not ideal as it is happening more and more and is very disruptive.

This happens on multiple devices, some connected via ethernet, other via wi-fi. I have fun_plug installed on the DNS-323 but don't really use it. Most stuff is done over Samba or the built in UPnP AV Server. Other than that, it's pretty much a standard box.

I'm wondering if anybody can offer any advice on how I can diagnose this problem? Could it be hardware related (is the DNS-323 dieing, are my drives dieing)? Software related (should I try a factory reset)?

Thanks in advance!

Step one should always be to do a factory reset whenever you run into issues like this.

Next is to configure using the IP address rather than the host name.

Third would be to disable the uPnP server as it is a resource pig.

3 * (DNS-323 with 2 * 2TB) = 12TB Running FW v1.08 & FFP v0.5

Do ALL the disconnects involve the DNS-323 or do they also occur with transfers not involving the DNS-323?
How long is the cable connecting the DNS-323 to the switch or router?  Have you tried replacing it?

Re: DNS-323 dropping connection every few minutes

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

So far I've done the following without resolving the issue:

- done a factory reset
- replaced the ethernet cable with a shorter one (about 3 feet long)

FunFiler, you suggested "configure using the IP address rather than the host name". I believe I am already doing this as I mount the network drive using the IP e.g. smb://192.168.1.100/Volume_1. Is that what you mean?

fordem, yes the disconnects only happen with the DNS-323.

I forgot to mention in my original post that I actually have two DNS-323s, both connected to the same network. They are both running firmware 1.08, the newer one I bought just over 1 year ago doesn't have any disconnect problems, it's only the older one (bought more than 3 years ago) that is suffering the disconnects.

I've been trying to recreate the problem today by playing a 1.5 hour long HD video over ethernet from the DNS-323 with the problem. The disconnect has happened a couple of times now and appears to be occurring at intervals of around 30/35 minutes. Running it again now with a close eye on the clock to confirm. Does that give any clue as to the what is causing it? Are there any network monitoring tools I can run to help diagnose the problem?

Thanks again for the help.

Re: DNS-323 dropping connection every few minutes

Swap the physical "positions" of the two DNS-323s, so that each unit is using the otherwise undisturbed network connection & power adapter of the other unit - if the disconnect problem remains with the unit, you know the problem is internal to the unit - at this point I'm thinking defective hardware.
