Transmission randomly quitting

So, I've had the DNS-323 (latest FW) for a while now and pretty much have it the way I like it.  I have my backup, file shares, web server, etc all working fine.  I've posted on this forums for a couple years now, helping others, etc, but NOW I have my own problem to figure out and I can't.  Transmission seems to be quitting randomly (web interface goes down, etc).  Transmission had always done this if I had like 10 torrents at once, etc.  So I was thinking maybe a memory problem.  I don't have anything running except /web/webs and UPNP AV.  No PHP, lighttpd, or anything hungry like that.  Root FS is only 73% full and `free` shows 7605 free in Mem (knowing that there is also Swap available).

Now, I can't even get it to keep running after only adding ONE torrent.  I will literally start Transmission, add a torrent, wait 1-5 min and it dies. Has anyone had this happen, or know what's going on?

I had v2.11, but I just updated to v2.31 and no change (using funpkg -u xxx.tgz).  Here is the settings.json:

I have something similar.... and may have a lead to a solution, although I'm not sure about that yet

I've had the same issue lately with Transmission. For some unknown reason, it started to freeze my DNS-313 completly (no telnet, no ssh, no web, no ftp: nothing) to the point I had to power it down, and reboot. I Decided to upgrade to latest release  2.31 that can be found by Kylek at this address: http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t2719-%5BREL% … ssion.html

But the problem remains. So I started to dig, and came up with this: On the transmission official site (https://trac.transmissionbt.com/wiki/NAS)  they are saying this:
    transmission-daemon needs to be run with EVENT_NOEPOLL defined on the environment. This applies to all versions of libevent, up to the current (2.0.11-stable). Reason: epoll has bugs on the kernel shipped with these devices.

Example: EVENT_NOEPOLL=1 transmission-daemon -f
incorporated into the start-up script (needs to be adapted to the specific script used)

Problem: I have no idea what this means (what is epoll, what does it do, and how do I pass this command ?

can anyone enlight me ?

If I'm not mistaken, kylek's build does not inlude libevent support, so this will probably have no effect.

Transmission definitely links to libevent (libtransmission uses it heavily), so it might have an effect.

Until now I thought the NOEPOLL issue was a thing of the past (very early versions of Transmission needed it), but the problem went away many versions ago. You guys are the first that report about these problems.

One thing you could do is run Transmission in a screen in foreground mode, so we might see any potential error messages.
This requires a bit of setup:

1. Install screen-4.0.3-2.tgz
2. Start screen by typing... 'screen' smile
3. Use this command to run Transmission:

You should see lots of status messages from Transmission now.
Quit the screen by pressing Ctrl-A, D.
Transmission is now running in the background within the screen and you can close the terminal to check back later.
If Transmission crashes/quits unexpectedly, maybe the screen output will tell use more.

Thanks Kylek, I've been looking for some way to debug Transmission and this is it.  Will report back.  The NOEPOLL did not work btw.

Ok, here is the log after it died (literally died in about 3 minutes).  I was downloading 5 torrents.  Everything is fine when I'm downloading 1 or 2, but any more it dies on me.  Sometimes dies if I have even 2.

On to the next idea. I've compiled Transmission 2.31 again with debug symbols, so maybe we can see where exactly it crashes.

1. Download this archive
2. Unpack it somewhere (don't use funpkg, it won't work)

Code:

$ mkdir Transmission-dbg  (create any folder, the name doesn't matter)
$ cd Transmission-dbg
$ tar xzf Transmission-2.31-dbg.tar.gz

(The file only contains transmission-daemon and transmission-remote)
4. Enable creation of a core file (which contains debug information if an application crashes)

Code:

$ ulimit -c unlimited   (If that throws an error, try ulimit -c 5000 or some similar value)

Now we do the same stuff as in my previous post:
5. Launch a screen
6. Run transmission (make sure you specify the path to the binary so the correct Transmission app is started)

Code:

$ su nobody -c "/path/to/Transmission-dbg/transmission-daemon -f -g /mnt/HD_a2/.transmission-daemon --log-debug

7. Wait for the crash smile

This should produce a file named "core" in your current folder. Please pack it up and put it up somewhere online where I can download it.

Hi Kylek,

I did everything as you said.  Downloaded and tarred the file in a new folder.  Ran the ulimit command with no error.  Started screen and ran the su nobody command and referenced the new transmission-daemon and watched the log flash in front of me until it said "Killed".  Then I did `ls -al` and there was no core file in that folder.  Would it be somewhere else?  (I never left that folder)

Is it possible I was in a root owned folder and `nobody` couldn't create the core file inside it?

EDIT: I did a `chmod -R 777 /ffp/var/packages/Transmission-bdg` and then reran it but still no core file.

Hm. You can check 2 things:

$ su nobody -c "ulimit -a"  (Press Enter when asked for a password)

The 'coredump' entry should be > 0 (possibly unlimited).
If not, try:

Code:

$ su nobody -c "ulimit -c unlimited"

If that doesn't work either, you could add the line "ulimit -c unlimited" to /ffp/etc/funplug.local  but this will require a restart.

Also check the core pattern:

cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern

If it say just "core", the core file should be created in the path where you start the application.

The last resort would be to not run Transmission as user nobody, but root instead.

Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

Kylek,

I really appreciate you trying to help me.  When I ran ulimit the first time, coredump was at 0, which was weird because I remember setting it to unlimited the first time you told me to.  Then I set it to unlimited again, checked it with -a and it was there.  Ran transmission but no core dump file.  When I check the core_pattern, it just says core.

I tried running transmission-daemon under root but after it died out there was still no core file.  Where is the dreaded core file!!!??? smile


EDIT:  Is it possible the dbg version is not producing a core dump file properly?  I tried putting the daemon at /mnt/HD_a2, changing the owner to root, then chown -R root /mnt/HD_a2/.transmission-daemon and still nothing.  No core file.  ulimit -c shows coredump at unlimited.

Hm. This is really weird. I would expect the system to record the crash into a coredump, but apparently it doesn't do so. I have no idea why.

My next idea is to run Transmission from within the debugger 'gdb'. I'm not sure if you're willing to give this one a try.
I'd like to do this one "live", so maybe we can meet up in the #transmission IRC channel some time? (I'm on German time, but won't be available for the next 24 hours).

Ok, it looks that produces a LOT of info.  Is there a way to direct this output into a file?  I tried:

su nobody -c "/path/trans -f -g /mnt/HD_a2/.trans --log-debug > /mnt/HD_a2/transmission.log 2>&1"

but that didn't seem to work.  I'm sure I'm making some syntax error somewhere with the output.

Reason I ask is because my Terminal window on OS-X only logs so much before it starts clipping it, if that makes sense.

The Transmission devs fixed several crash bugs recently (according to the logs), so I made a Transmission build just for you to see if the crashes disappear.

You can download it here.


Another idea of mine was to start with a new Transmission profile (set everything up from scratch), and add all current torrents one after another.
Maybe the crash is caused by a faulty torrent.

I downloaded the file, but when I went to install it said Already Installed (funpkg -u xxx.tgz).  I'm not sure how that's possible.  I'm afraid to just funpkg -r because I'll lose all my settings, resume, etc. 

The log file that the `tee` created got up to 256MB in just a few min...I ended the process bc trans had not died and the output was making the web interface slow (took about 5 min to load the interface) to load.  I removed all old torrents and added 5 new torrents and it did the same thing (died after some time, actually took around 20min and I was afraid the log file was going to go 5GB+), so maybe not a faulty torrent problem.

I'm going to keep trying different things based on what you've suggested but I wanted to give you an update.  I will see if I can let the TR_DEBUG variable output it all to a HUGE log file and see what I get, but I want to be here to monitor just in case it gets too big (only 25% space left on HDD).

The Transmission build that I made for you ist just the transmission-daemon binary, like the debug build I did earlier.
Unpack and use it the same way as the the debug build, and we shall see if it still crashes.

To disable the enormous amount of debug messages, type:

PS: I don't think you actually need to log the output of TR_DEBUG_FD to a file. Only the last couple of lines just before a crash would be relevant/helpful, so as long as you run in foreground mode in a screen, we should be fine.
(The web interface will still be very slow because Transmission will spend a lot of time writing messages to the screen :)

Kylek, so far so good!  Using the new binary I have not had a crash.  I will continue to assume this build fixed my problem until I get a crash.  I will report back if so.

Great to hear!
Now the binary I compiled for you is build in debug mode and thus not very performant.
I just compiled the final Transmission 2.32 release, you can download it from the main thread.
