"Invalid File Handle" While Copying a Large Number of Files

Hi,
I am trying to rearrange my files and take an offsite backup.  This involves copying files between the two HDDs in the DNS-323 and copying files between the DNS-323 and my PC harddrive.

I am using Windows Explorer in Windows 7. I do not know how to tell whether the HDDs are Ext2 or Fat32.

I mostly  try to drag and drop to copy the files. I just tried out copy and paste using the Ctrl C and V, and had the same errors.  They are big folders, but it seems to mostly be the same small number of files causing my problems.

When I have a large batch of files at some point the process stops and I get a message saying "There is a problem accessing DLINK.../Volume_1.  Make sure you are connected to the network and try again." As far as I can see from the router and the DLINK, everything is running fine.  When I press Try Again, it chugs for a while then I get the next error...

It names a specific file and says "invalid file handle".  I can Try Again, Skip or Cancel.  If I Try Again it comes again; if I Skip it finds another file with the same problem; and if I Cancel the process is only half completed.  With the number of files and folders I am transferring.  In one smaller folder I have 2 files with invalid file handle errors, and when I look at the properties of the files they do not have any attributes, and do not look in any way interesting.

When I attempt to open these files in photo viewer or paint.net, I get "the file appears to be damaged corrupted or is too large" (photo viewer) or "an unspecified error" (paint.net).

I have had the same/similar problems while copying video files and audio files.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Describe the network linking the PC and the DNS-323.

This snip from your post is reminiscent of a problem I used to have many years ago when transferring files between a laptop and a Windows server using a wireless connection.

The exact scenario is not critical as long as you understand the cause - which relates primarily to an error prone network connection somewhere between the two devices - individual small files transfer without error, but larger files or large groups of small files cause problems - if you have that pattern, look at the network.

Do you happen to have MiniDLNA running?  I seem to have a similar problem that whenever MiniDLNA is running - whether it be with inotify enabled or disabled - that I cannot copy any large files via the samba server..  FTP works fine.

Re: "Invalid File Handle" While Copying a Large Number of Files

Hey guys,

I have the same issue, did someone found a solution?

My HDDs are alligned, so the 4K problem is avoided.
I have fun_plug running on my DNS-323 and "transmission" for p2p. "Transmission" downloaded a folder that contains a few files. One of them is 1.37GB, however. I start to copy it and at 54% it stops and says:
"There is a problem accessing U:\\foldername\filename.txt", "Make sure you are connected to the network and try again.". I can choose "Try Again" or "Cancel".
If I press "Try Again" it says "Invalid File Handle". I can choose "Try Again" or "Cancel". If I press "Try Again" it starts from scratch and stops at the same percentage and the history is repeated... This is the first time when it happenes. Everything is OK with the network itself since pingi haven't lost a packet.

My PC have Windows 7 x64 on it.

I tried a few things:
- In transmission I've changed the data location, and it moved the entire folder to the second partition on my NAS.
- Stopping "transmission" doesn't help.
- It's not a large file issue, since I can easily copy and retrieve files even over 4GB without any problem.
- I've copied the file successfuly with WinSCP. Of course SCP is slower than Samba.

Maybe it's something at Samba level? If so, what can be done to fix this issue?

Thank you!

Alex

I have to assume that you have read the posts in the thread - including one that asks for a description of the network linking the two devices, and explaining that the symptoms MAY relate to a network error ...

Thanks for answering.
I could reproduce the error on a wired XP workstation as well as on a Win7 laptop with WiFi. The Network consists of a Linksys WRT54GL router with Linux Firmware. I've also tested the copy when I've switched off some Windows7 special network feature. That time with Ethernet.
