Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Piecing together instructions from the forum I was able to move fun_plug and its telnet-related items to my 323. I used WS_FTP for this, after establishing an authenticated session (which means I don't have to 777 the files?).
After a restart I see these files on Volume_1:
lnx_bin (directory)
busybox3
dmesg.out
fun_plug
starttelnet.sh
utelnetd
However, when trying to use puTTY to telnet into my system I get a blank terminal window for about 1 second, then it closes with an error sound. No other explanation is given.
What did I miss? I've tried connecting via the 323's name and its internal IP address.
I do have the connection box set to Telnet, rather than SSH.
My Linux command line fu is weak, so please be gentle in that regard.
Thanks for the newbie assistance!

You need to reassure that PuTTy is using port 23 if you want to connect with telnet!

That worked -- thank you!

I was definitely using port 23 and it wasn't working. I read about other people missing that setting here on the boards. Thanks! :-)

I can't telnet either.
I just got my DNS-323. Setup in Raid 1, then upgraded from 1.01 to 1.03 firmware. Then attempted setting up telnet using the wiki.
When that failed, I tried the suggested fun_plug by KRH.
After the reboot, my \\nas\Volume_1 still shows only the fun_plug and fun_plug tar files. For whatever reason, the tar file is not being extracted.
It seems that something is preventing these hacking activities. Is it related to the newer 1.03 firmware?
Is there some other type of configuration/setup that I'm missing?
Thanks in advance.

I installed fonz' fun plug on 1.03, no problems. so the firmware is not the issue. I followed the directions on fonz' web site at the link in my sig below.

I finally got it. I don't know exactly what it is but my guess is f****** windows. I used file explorer to copy the files over.
This time I deleted everything and used cygwin to ftp the 2 files over and did chmod.
Booyah!
