I've bought a new 1TB drive to put in a USB enclosure and to format in whatever way I'd like from my Linux laptop. Once I've done that, I'd like to occassionally connect it to my DNS-323's USB port and be able to transfer some files back and forth. What options do I have for formatting it on my Linux laptop in a way where it'll still be accessible from my DNS-323?
If I have a Linux laptop, what would be the speed difference between transferring files back and forth between the following 2 options:
1) the DNS-323 and a USB enclosure connected to it's USB port
2) the DNS-323 connected to my (fast) Linux laptop via a crossover cable, and a USB enclosure connected to my Linux laptop's USB 2.0 port
Would option #2 be slower than #1, or would they be about the same? Or would #2 be significantly slower? The reason I'm considering #2 is because I'd like to encrypt my disks, and unless I've misunderstood then it's not possible for the DNS-323 to connect to an encrypted drive connected to its USB port. (At least it seems not enough people here have done it that I'd feel comfortable doing it in case I need to ask questions about it.) But if I put my Linux laptop in the middle I can transfer to an encrypted USB drive.
