Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.
You are not logged in.
-Alt-F can now be directly flashed using the vendor's firmware, no need for fun_plug
(tested with D-Link firmware 1.09 on a rev-B1 hardware box)
-Support for greater then 2.2TB disks (with UEFI GPT partitioning)
Disk Partitioner and Disk Wizard support
Conversion from MBR to GPT and vice-versa
-Secure (https) web pages through the optional package 'stunnel'
Both http and https are active (swat uses port 902 for https)
-The Backup Service can now backup remote hosts using ftp/http/smb/nfs/rsync/rsyncd.
It can even wakeup the remote host at backup time if the remote host is configured
to be awaked-up by a network magic packet, WOL.
Files greater than 4.2GB are not supported.
-Debian now installs into and runs from RAID
-More online-help pages
-uClibc changes for Optware compatibility. However, most Optware packages are still not usable.
Due to the uClibc change, the recommended procedure is to update all packages
after upgrading to RC1 (the Alt-F_B7_to_RC1.fix script does this)
-updated packages: samba, netatalk, forked-daapd, transmission, avahi,
cups, mdadm, rsync, smartmontools, wget, openssh, ffmpeg, hplip,
libcurl, libpcap, libxml2, lzo, dnsmasq, dropbear, libiconv,
msmtp, nfs-utils, ntp, netsnmp, libgcrypt,
libgpg-error, libpcre, popt,
-samba-3.5.9 update asks for configuration file editing,
adding "passdb backend = smbpasswd" to the Global section
(the Alt-F_B7_to_RC1.fix script does this)
-Thanks to samba, now using 1/3 of flash space! the base firmware had to be compiled for
flash memory space saving, not execution speed :-(
-disk-installable packages are still compiled for execution speed
-new packages: gptfdisk, openvpn, cryptsetup, lvm2, iscsitarget, nut, parted,
nmap, sysstat, bonnie++, ntfs-3g_ntfsprogs, stunnel,
-cryptsetup initial support adds capability to LUKS format a physical partition.
-No checks are done to see if the partition is currently in use
-remember dm-crypt/LUKS is 3 to 4 times slower than a non encrypted partition!
-there are some problems identifying and handling devices, cryptsetup fault,
as it generates lots of (unnecessary?) device add/remove kernel events.
-LVM initial support, scan volume groups and and mounts physical volumes
no web interface to create and manage them.
-LVM and cryptsetup might interfere Disk Partitioner.
You might have to stop them manually if problems arise.
Enjoy,
Joao
PS-Oops, packages are not yet updated on the "cloud", please hold-on a few more minutes before running the transition fix script or trying to update packages
PS2--The stunnel package is in error. I will update it ASAP.
-fuppes is not working. As it depends on a lot of other packages it is going
to take more time to debug.
PS3-stunnel updated and working (https pages to the web interface)
-Using "Adjust time through internet" in Setup->Time is not working!
Please set the time manually, or you will be logged off after one hour and
your password not accepted.
If this happens, telnet or ssh the box as user 'root' (the password will be
accepted) and issue the command
sntp -s pool.ntp.org
to adjust the time. You should then be able to login using the web
interface.
Argh!
PS4-I can't really be updating two sites. If you want to be updated with news, please use the Alt-F group.

dumb question but do you flash RC1 first then run the fix script or the other way around?
I would think flash first then run script.

Hello Joao,
I have flashed 0.1RC1 and ran you script. Everything went fine without any issue and the time update is working for me?! Even the user services like minidlna is running from the start now.
Thank you for giving this little nas a further live support.
Have a nice weekend and rest yourself now!

I just installed the new firmware and I'm completely new to this. I'm interested in setting up a vpn to my home network through this, is there a thread anywhere that explains how to use/setup the openvpn package mentioned in the "new packages" section?
All of the ones I found were from a year or two ago at least
I'm not at all experienced when it comes to linux so a step-by-step guide would be helpful
Thanks

Has anyone else problems with the usb-storage driver?
Since 0.7 i have the minidlna running and put his database to /mnt/sdc1/minidlna and that works pretty well. Now after update something trash the database
[2011/10/16 14:54:28] sql.c:41: error: SQL ERROR 10 [disk I/O error]
So i tried to rebuild the complete database with "minidlna -R" that results to trash with errors like
[2011/10/16 14:54:29] sql.c:41: error: SQL ERROR 11 [database disk image is malformed]
Now i have moved the database back to /var/lib/mediadlna and it seems to run well. But data loss on usb-storage is something new for me.

1st of all this is my 1st post and I'd like to thank you for the ALTF firmware.
Been running it for 2 weeks on my DNS323 rev.B
I have a few things I need help with:
- the status page always shows a red * for each drive. I checked the file systems, there were some errors and they were corrected but the red * still shows;
- about once every 2 days the I find the nas turned off. I have no idea why;
- is there a way to get the prompt to login before getting access to any page? Now the status page doesn't ask for any password.
- can we have SSL login and access to the web interface?
- is ALTF slower than the latest Dlink firmware? With the same test system I used to copy with ~16MB/sec, with ALTF I get at max 11MB/sec;
- anything can be done to lower the memory fingerprint?
Thanks! Looking forward to v1 final

Stupid question, but how does one update from a previous version of Alt-F to this new version? Do we just flash the firmware or is there more involved than that? Just curious before I do it, since it isn't noted in the release notes.

Hello Dan,
you must copy and run an additional script via telnet access. Otherwise you will have problems accesing your shared volumes because of a new samba package. How this must be applied is described with the included readme file.

Thanks, worked flawless!

Thanks João for all your efforts.
I updated to the latest RC1, ran the Samba update script which also updated all my installed packages as well.
It gives me great confidence in using this software, and also updating, when things work so well.

You mean the "Dirty" column? Are you using the ext2 filesystem? ext2 is always "dirty" (by design, I suppose.)

Neither me . I have no such issue.

The status page never needed authentication. All other pages needs, aren't you being directed to the login page?

Yes, use the "stunnel" package. It's in the announcement.

Alt-F uses the latest packages version, unmodified.
With developers tendency to bloat their products, that is probably the reason why you get lower performance.
Developers frequently use multi-core and multi-GB memory computers to develop, and what are unnoticeable performance issues on these computers might become an issue on embedded low-grade CPU/memory products. Not sure...
- anything can be done to lower the memory fingerprint?
Alt-F, without installed packages, has a lower memory footprint than the vendor's firmware. Well, at least it had, until the last samba upgrade from version 3.3.9 to 3.5.11 (I have not evaluates it since then)
Thanks! Looking forward to v1 final

I have no problem with USB attached disks or pens, and nobody else complained.
Was you using a pen/thumb drive? Those have flash-based memory devices, not suitable to frequent writes.

Is there a way to convert the file system from EXT2 to EXT4 without loosing the data?
I mean I'm pretty sure the answer is no as there are so many things that could go wrong but it's worth asking.
@jcard: I meant if there is a way of not having access to any page (including the status page) without logging in.
One more thing: On the status page it shows the clients having mounted filesystems. How accurate is that info.
If I have a client saving a 10kB file on the NAS once a day at 1PM, is it normal to see it listed as still connected at 10PM?
Thanks!

As a matter of fact there is:
Disk->Filesystems
on the appropriate FS line select under "New FS Operations"
New Fs->select the new FS you want, then
Operation->Convert
The FS will be converted and new files will use the new FS characteristics. Old files remain as they are. For converting those, you might want to read the topic "e2fsprogs in ffp outdated but needed for final ext4 migration" in the Alt-F group.

I consider that a feature... as any user might diagnose problems -- it's like a car fuel gauge. What are the disadvantages?

You mean smb/cifs? It just shows what samba reports, probably the client has not closed the connection?
