It should be about 7+ MB size, without the extension as you have noticed. Log into the DNS-323 as admin and click on Tools at the top-middle of the page and then click on Firmware on the left side of the page...

When installing a new update, does it delete any files? should you make a backup?

Main reason you may lose data is if you update from 1.01 to 1.03 (say) as EXT3 is no longer supported and this will force a reformat. If you have EXT2 to begin with you will probably be ok. I was

Apart from the ext2/ext3 issue mentioned above, there should be no need to reformat the disks and no risk of data loss - however - the only way to know what a particular firmware update will do is to read the release notes that come with it.
I don't expect files to be deleted, but having said that, it is always a good idea to have a backup of ANY & ALL data that you consider valuable - and mirroring is NOT a backup.
