Breaking RAID 1 into Standard - gone wrong!

I wanted to remove RAID 1 as I no longer have the need for redundancy and could use the extra space.  I followed the instructions I found on a couple of threads:

1. Powered off
2. Removed one drive (happened to be the left hand drive)
3. Powered on
4. Logged in to web interface and chose Tools > RAID > Set RAID Type and Reformat
5. Chose Standard (ext2)
6. Once complete, powered off
7. Powered on and confirmed blank drive in Standard format
8. Powered off and added second disk
9. Went to GUI and it asked me to reformat.  Clicked Skip and it shows as Degraded RAID

Can anyone tell me the best procedure to get it to Standard. Is it possible to do it without formatting the drive that still contains data?  Is it possible to remove the RAID info from the disk so it thinks it's Standard?

Thanks!
