I was having a problem mapping the two drives in my DNS-323 until I tried to map them using Windows 7. In Windows Explorer right click on network and map network drives one at a time as E&F and they both appear as network drives in my computer.

What hds would you advice to buy for this NAS?
I mean, 2x1.5Tb - 2.0Tb to use in RAID 1 without ANY kind of problem...

Can anyone confirm that the Samsung F4 HD204UI 2TB works in RAID1 on the DNS323? It appears that everyone is going to the 4K 2TB drives and the older drives are harder to get. Does it work out of the box or do you have to do the 4k alignment thingy?

Anyone else try the F4s in RAID1 on the DNS323?

Working well for a week now. I don't want to risk a malfunction using 4k sector drives so I waited for these older ones for two weeks instead. I'm using them separately (we know RAID isn't a backup solution, so I backup with rsync). Copying 1,5TB from old HDDs took 2 days with "cp -a", the first rsync backup took more than 4 days... not a Speedy Gonzales but I love it...

Is the DNS323 incompatible with all 4K drives, or only the WD ones?
I want to buy two 2TB disks for it, and I only find 4K drives available. Are the seagate 4K disks compatible?

I purchased two 2TB Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117) 3.5" SATA drives for installing in my new DNS-323 in RAID 1 configuration. These drives are selling for $70 each at Newegg after $10 rebate (limit two).

These drives are supposed to be 512b sector drives. Has anyone had any experience with these drives on DNS-323 with RAID 1? If so, any caveats?

I will follow up with another post once I get the drives and install them.

I was able to setup my DNS-323 with two 2TB Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 drives (these are not AFDs and use 512b sectors) in RAID1 format. Setup was very smooth. I ran a very crude plain ftp (non-ssl) test from one of my Solaris boxes to the NAS and got 12 megabytes per second thruput (dont have gigabit ethernet). So far, the device has been very stable and I have just begun to hack it.

I have a pair of Hitachi 7K3000 2TB drives and they DO NOT work even with the latest 1.10 beta 5 firmware. They use the same design as the new 3TB drives but have lower capacity. I was able to format them using EXT3 but file copy hangs and the NAS stops responding. :-(

I believe the 7K3000 drives use 4K sectors, which have known issues with DNS-323. 5K3000 drives use 512b sectors which are known to work with DNS-323.

Looking to see if anyone has used Western Digitial WD15EVDS (1.5TB, SATA/300, 32MB cache, AV-GP family) in NAS (any configuration)? I do not see it mentioned anywhere on this forum nor is it shown in the official "supported" list by D-Link. The description for this drive, from WD, is:

Thoughts? If I read that correctly, this particular model (WD15EVDS) does not use the Advanced Format.

I decided to buy the 2TB version instead and have successfully installed into NAS! Just pulled the existing 500GB drives out, inserted both new drives, and formatted them as ext3 in RAID1. Then installed FFP, got SSH running and installed the updated Samba (3.4.6-1) but left it disabled until I reloaded all my data from the old drive by connecting it via the USB port and doing cp -a. The only thing I needed to do that I had not expected was regenerate the passwords via smbpasswd for my defined users - since it appears this new version of Samba is using the .tbd files. Other than that, so far so good.

Right this is what I have used in my DNS-323, using v1.10beta firmware:
Samsung F2 1.5TB (worked fine)

Samsung F4 2TB (AFT drives) (worked fine in Raid 1 and as individual disks [tested both]).

FYI:
WD supports AFT drives in Home NAS. Of course, this is not a guarantee of "life without problems".
And there is DLINK Beta firmware 1.10 (Beta 7) with AFT-compaatible format (you need to reformat HDD to realign it)

I have been looking at the same 2tb hitachi deskstar 5k3000 but there are some saying that they do not work well in conjunction with the dns 323. I think they would require a better capacity in order for them to work. I have used one with the same brand but with different specs and had no problems. They are actually practical that is why they have been a choice for me.

I've tried 2TB Hitachi CoolSpin 5K3000 - HDS5C3020ALA632 in a Raid 1 EXT3 with no luck tried firmwares 1.07/ 1.08/ 1.09/ 1.10beta5/6/7, factory default.

on each firmware the format stops at random points the best i got was 94%

Any thing else i can try? And if not i guess I'll have to go for 1.5gb drives.

Instead of Raid 1, have you tried formatting as individual drives?

yep however after reading more on the forum i think i'm affected by the 94% format issue. but after trying all the methods to fix that IE cache/ restart/ etc it still didn't work for so returned the drives and now looking at 2 new drives.

That's too bad, as I was considering picking up a pair of these Hitachi for a 323, but now I'm not so sure it's a good choice.

Not so fast! What kind of partitioning scheme is used? If MBR, then there's a limit of 2GB. If GPT is supported then there's no such limit.
If I'm not mistaken, only ALT-F supports GPT on the DNS-323.

I recently purchased a Seagate 2TB ST2000DM001-9YN1; duly upgraded my DNS to 1.10 (I presume B7) firmware but formatting hangs at 11%, web server locks-up and only course is to remove power. I've unsuccessfully attempted format 3 times now.

Any thoughts on how to progress ? I'd assumed 1.10B7 supported this device.

I would consider switching ALT-F but I use Twonky which isn't supported. I guess I don't wholly understand why it's not possible to format this disk in advance, before installing. So frustrating !

I can confirm that the Seagate 3TB Barracuda 7200rpm SATA III w/ 64MB Cache Model ST3000DM001-9YN166 works on the DNS-323 using the Alt-F firmware. It wasn't easy but doable if you have to, to get things working.
