Is there any reason NOT to upgrade the firmware to 1.03 ?

Just as the topic says, is there any reason why a user would want to keep their stock firmware and NOT upgrade to the 1.03 firmware ?

Thanks
Christopher

None that I'm aware of.

Well, I take that back - let's change it to - none that I would consider reasonable.

If you go to the D-Link site, you can see the release notes for the different versions of the firmware - these document what was added or removed, someone could have a compelling need for one of the features that might have been removed.

V1.02b removed support for the ext3 file system - if you really had to have ext3, and you were prepared to risk the file corruption that the DNS-323 implementation seemed to allow, then you'd have to stay at V1.02 (or earlier).

V1.02 removed scandisk & defrag - if you really had to have them - you get the idea.

Re: Is there any reason NOT to upgrade the firmware to 1.03 ?

I found that 1.03 did not stream video to my DMS-320RD media player very well. (The video was jerky). I went back to 1.02b and it now works much better!

Don't know if this is an issue with any other media player?

Obviously if you don't use this feature you may not care, but I don't see any big advantage in 1.03 either!!!

Well 1.03 fixed the 2G file limit with Vista & Server 2003 along with email notifications, which were more important to me than streaming video - that's why I suggested you take a look at the release notes.

Re: Is there any reason NOT to upgrade the firmware to 1.03 ?

I have a friend who has a DMS 520 Media Player and he's having audio sync problems.  Doubt it is 1.03 related.  His problem is that if he plays movies compressed from DVD's to avi over his DMS 520 there is an audio sync problem, which doesn't happen if he plays the same AVI on his PC.  He has been in contact with D-Link suport and they've pretty much agreed after consultation with the technical people that this is a design feature.  The specs say "mp3" and other audio formats, but don't mention AC3.

It would seem this has nothing to do with the DNS 323.  Only with the DMS 520.  Another Media player called the MViX recognizes AC3 and also plays IFO/VOB and ISO movies.  http://www.mvixusa.com/  Seems like a good bet for a player untill D-Link gets things reordered.

As for my DNS 323, I've been running 1.04 beta for awhile and had a lot of trouble with file names on my ftp.  I reflashed to 1.03 and the name problem disappeared.  (little square boxes being substituted for characters in the directory or file name)  making the files unusable to my friends.

Or more specifically the specs on http://mvixusa.com/product.php?product= … page=specs

Video  DivX® (3/4/5), AVI, Xvid, BivX®, MPEG, MPG, VCD(DAT), DVD(VOB, IFO), ISO, WMV(WMV-9), ASF(WMV-9), TP, TS, TRP
Audio  MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, PCM, AC3, DTS decoding including down-mixing, DTS pass through

DMS 520 doesn't do AC3, VOB, IFO or ISO.
