DNS-327L

Has anyone purchased this? Have been seriously considering updating my DNS-323 for ages, and am wondering if the DNS-327L is a good option. Hackability is huge for me.

From what I can gather about the DNS-327L

Processor: Marvell 1.2 GHz
Maximum capacity: 8 TB
RAM: 512MB
On Board Flash Memory: 128 MB
LAN : 10/100/1000 Mbit/s,
USB: 1x 3.0

I'm intrigued by:

- <$200 price point
- 4TB/slot ability
- USB 3.0
- 512RAM and 1.2GHz

Likely not strong enough to transcode HD video on the fly, but might solve some of the transmission, minidlna, and samba lag I've been getting on the DNS-323 (which is a device that has more than paid for itself).

Cheers!

edit: Clear competitor would be the similarly spec'd DS213j by Synology, which is about $30 more and lacks the USB 3.0 port (2.0 instead). Would the Dlink be anymore hackable than the Synology? Any input?

Re: DNS-327L

How about the ZyXEL NSA325?
- 1.6 GHz Kirkwood
- 512 MiB Ram
- 128 MiB Flash
- 1x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.1
- 2 disks, 4TB supported
- $ 170

The fastest in it's category according to SmallNetBulder:
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/rankers/ … -1?rank=39

Hackability:
- FFP support
- Full GPL sources available, which actually build to firmware. So you can change whatever you want.
- I wouldn't be surprised if soon Arch Linux support will be available.

As far as I know this box has 2 problems:
- The fan is not quiet. You don't want it in your bed- or living room.
- There is some nasty watchdog, which makes booting a custom kernel hard. More here.

Re: DNS-327L

Another thing to consider is buying a HP N54L (Gen7) Microserver for $2xx and run the Xpenology build that someone has done from the Synology source code. It is a 4-bay enclosure with an AMD processor and the performance is much better than the DNS'es.
