DLink DNS 323 Performance
I have the DLink DNS 323 Ethernet connected to an AirPort Extreme with two drives not set up with RAID. I store the family photos and videos on these drives. When accessing these drives from a Windoes laptop, the performance of just navigating the file structure can be very slow. For example, it can take over a minute when clicking on a folder to get the next set of sub-folders displayed. Then when opening a file (e.g. a 9MB JPEG file, it can take 15-20 seconds for the file to open.
This doesn't seem normal. I was thinking about switching to a Synology dS213j, but I am not convinced that the Dlink is my problem. Any suggestions?

You are right. This is not normal, and the DLink is likely not the problem. You have a laptop, does that mean that you are using wireless? Try a cable.

It is a little faster but still slow. For example, to open a folder with video files (8 files with about 1GB of data) takes about a minute just to display the list (this isn't even trying to open any of the files). Thus is when I am connected via an Ethernet cable. It seems that the first time I open a directory structure it takes longer, then it goes faster after that (probably since it is cached).

Is your drive spinning down due to inactivity? This would easily explain a delay on access.
