Di I need identical disks from the same manufacturer ?

Hello,

I am using Linux, and my DNS-323 is in Standard mode. I have a WD 500GB in one slot and I just got given a seagate 500GB from a friend. Will I be able to use these two disks in the DNS-323, or do they have to both be Identical in everyway ? They are the same capacity. I may later switch them to RAID1.

Will this be an issue for Standard or RAID1 ?

Thanks
C.

Re: Di I need identical disks from the same manufacturer ?

I've mixed disks in RAID1 setups before and never had any issues...I don't know if it is preferred for any reason (things like differences in access/write speeds, buffer sizes, etc.), but I don't think it's required.

In most cases with RAID1, you can use disks from different manufacturers, however if you use disks of different capacities, your RAID1 volume will be limited to the size of the smaller disk, and you lose the remaining capacity on the larger disk.

With the DNS-323, you do not lose the remaining capacity, it will be available as a separate volume.
